We recently had the chance to connect with Matt J. Bond and have shared our conversation below.
Matt J., a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I was married to the most amazing woman on the face of the earth this past October! So beginning the first steps of building the rest of our lives together has been nothing short of a joy and a delight.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey! My name is Matt J. Bond, I’m an independent filmmaker living and operating out of the Los Angeles area. I have my own production company, Towers in the Window that specializes in a genre I have coined as “campy homage”. Paying homage to the films of yesteryear, specifically the genre heavy films of the 70s & 80s all wrapped up with a modern lens and bold colour palettes.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was when I picked up my parents Canon camcorder as a kid. I had always loved telling stories since I was very young, but I was probably around 8 or 10 when I started using my parents camera to film very crude films with my Legos and action figures… and in that moment I realized that if I could dream it, I could do it.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one thing to my younger self it would be “Just keep going. At times it’s gonna feel like nobody wants to hear your ideas, see your art, or listen to your stories. But as long as you love what you’re telling and are happy in what you’re doing, that’s all that matters.”
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lies my industry tells I think are that you need millions of dollars, a big studio and a massive crew to make impactful art. Some of the most impactful films I’ve ever seen are random shorts I find online or see in passing at festivals. Often made for pennies and with a skeleton crew to end all skeleton crews.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I’d stop waiting. I’d stop overthinking about details and just trust my instincts and myself a little more.
