Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with JONE JONES of Echo Park

JONE JONES shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning JONE , it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
Currently I’m chasing my dreams of making it in music. I’ve always wanted to do this since I was a kid and started making beats at 13. Now I’m going for it and I’m not worried about when I make it or how I make it because I know it’s gonna happen it’s just a matter of time.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is JONE JONES, I’m an artist in LA and I’ve been making music for the last 10 years. I’ve experimented with many different sounds but currently I’m focused on rap and r&b. I was born and raised here in LA, grew up in highland park and have been tapping into my local music scene throwing pop up shows and events. My music is heavily influenced by my environment so I’m constantly trying to tell stories that I encounter in the city, whether they’re personal to me or inspired by friends and what they’re doing with they’re life.

I’m currently releasing a project called “JUST A MATTER OF TIME”. It’s a collection of songs that are heavily inspired by the LA music scene right now as well as the 90s/80s. It tells my story of where I’m at in this stage of my career and where I would like to be a few years from now. This project is meant to be the soundtrack to the summer 25. I made sure to give a variety of different types of songs so there’s something for everybody on this record.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I think when I was a child I believed I was invisible. I was a pretty shy kid and had a lot of social anxiety before that was really a thing. I don’t know I guess I had an awkward faze like everybody else. But once I got older I started to find my confidence through music and grew out of that. Performing in front of people and throwing shows definitely helped me get more confident in front of people. I had to be, you can’t be shy as an artist you gotta stand on your art and put yourself out there. I think if you told younger me that I was doing what I’m doing my now he would be shocked.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
We did it

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Sometimes. I think on stage I always tap into an alter ego, a version of me that’s bigger than me. Kind of like the version I wish I was all the time. The real version of me is actually very quiet and calculated. I’m a studio rat, I live in the studio analyzing drum patterns, bass lines melodies. I like to get scientific with it, in the studio alone is when I feel the most like me.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
I’m making music and hustling. We’ll see what happens I may not see a pay off for 10 years but I’m okay with that because I know my destiny. I’d rather try for 10 years and fail then be 90 years old and regret never trying at all.
