Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with David Emenheiser of Lancaster

We’re looking forward to introducing you to David Emenheiser. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning David , it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
That one’s easy. Photography has always been my safe place, my God-given therapy session. When the world feels loud and chaotic, it allows me to disconnect and breathe. Through my lens, I get to slow down, focus, and see the beauty God places in front of us every single day. It’s where my mind finds peace and my soul feels grounded.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is David Emenheiser, and I founded David Joseph Photo in 2018. With the encouragement of my wife, Darlene—my biggest supporter—what started as a hobby slowly transformed into a calling and a business. I now specialize in event and landscape photography and am proud to be the photographer for the Antelope Valley Fair, as well as a contracted photographer for the City of Lancaster and City of Palmdale. While events allow me to tell powerful stories, my heart belongs to landscape and night photography, where I can slow down, create, and capture the beauty God places before us.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
For 20 years, I battled alcohol, meth, and heroin addiction. I was lost, broken, and searching for relief in all the wrong places. In 2014, I hit my lowest point—crashed out in a dope house, a moment that should have been the end of me. Instead, it became my rebirth.
I once believed drugs were the only way to cope with my past trauma, but in reality, they were the slow death of my identity—disguised as freedom. In that moment of complete surrender, God revealed Himself to me. I truly believe He brought photography into my life to give me purpose, to restore what was lost, and to help me see beauty again. Through the lens, I found healing, meaning, and a new way to engage with the world

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me humility. It taught me gratitude for every single moment—even the quiet, ordinary ones. It showed me that with God, I never have to walk alone. And because I lived in the darkness for so long, suffering gave me the ability to truly feel the joy I carry today. Without it, I wouldn’t know the depth of light.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
They’d tell you that my faith is everything to me. I pray daily that people see Jesus in me—not just in my words, but in the way I live and love my life. I want my life to glorify Him, and I hope my photography offers a small glimpse into the beauty God has created for all of us to see.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope they say my life was marked by faith, by loving others the way Jesus loves us. I hope it’s a story of overcoming and healing—of a man who found purpose after brokenness and lived with passion rooted in something greater than himself.
