Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Dave Jacobsen of Long Beach

Dave Jacobsen shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Dave, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
An easy way to time travel through a day is by putting on some music and playing around in the studio. I love going in without a plan and just experimenting with different lighting set ups. When the photos are for someone else, there’s usually a lot of structure with a clear goal in mind, so it’s nice to explore when it’s just me.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Dave Jacobsen and I am a Photographer and Director of Photography. While I do a bit of everything visually, my stills work is focused more towards portraits and my video work is more commercial based. I also really enjoys editing my photos to help further tell a story.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
While I figured out what I wanted to do with my life at a pretty early age, it comes from a different perspective now. For some reason I always thought about making a name for myself, somehow wanting to be in the spotlight. When the reality behind what is really important is the right team working together. This kind of art for me will always be about collaboration, not just one name.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
It has to be one of the most common fears, right? The fear of failure and all the what ifs that come with it. What if I’m not ready for this? What if I can’t get any good images out of a shoot? What if they don’t like me? It’s easy to dismiss those things when looking back and being proud of your portfolio, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen every single time.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
One can learn a lot about their inner self by really looking at their outer self. I think with my self portraits, I learn a little more each time I’m in front of the lens. It didn’t start out to be a long term project, but I definitely plan to continue doing self portraits through the rest of my years.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I have been very fortunate to be able to pursue photography so fluidly between motion and stills. It’s something that I decided I would be doing for the rest of my life quite some time ago. Through hard work and dedication to my craft, everything has lined up in the right ways for me to be able to explore the things I find most interesting. I’ve always had the support from family and friends and feel extremely grateful to be in my position.
