We’re looking forward to introducing you to Andre Echave. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Andre, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I think I used to strive to walk a path. When I first started magic, i thought this was such a rigid path, and all I wanted to do was perform magic, make people happy and entertain the masses. Now, i think it’s a bit nuanced. Yes I’m still doing all those things but now that I’ve been walking the path, I’ve found the value in wandering. Wandering, for me, allows me to experience life from different points of view, observe what makes more people smile, observe what brings joy to people who are different than I and understand how and to be more effective with what I do. I feel like the idea of wandering allows me to be more open, more free and more observant with how the world works and it’s a more enjoyable way to live my own personal life.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Andre Echave. I am a magician, performing under the name Dremagix. I have been performing magic for about 15 years now. Being a professional magician is also a bit strange to say out loud for me but I perform magic for schools, private events, weddings and have done public speaking engagements for corporate events.
I would think I was a really quiet kid growing up. I always followed the rules and did the best I could to do what the world expected of me. That’s how I always thought I would become successful and live a happy life. And then I learned magic. Magic is showcasing that the rules of the world can be broken and in a fun and entertaining way no less. It is also a vehicle to share stories; the story of my life and a showcase of my culture and where I come from.
I think that’s what makes it special. I like to combine storytelling, comedy and magic in my performance so there is a little bit of something for everyone.
Currently I am working on a tour of 5 different one man magic shows simultaneously. Usually when people tour, they do one show over and over again. I wrote 5 different ones and I think giving every city I visit, something a little different is exciting for the audience and more importantly myself and my team.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My relationship with my parents most shaped who I am. My mother and father showed me what it meant to be the most hard working person I could be. They came here from the Philippines and wanted a better life for my brother and I. And because of them, I am living the best life I could live. They instilled me with the values of who I am at my core; hard work, humility, creativity, and kindness. I owe everything to them and I hope I can make them proud.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self to relax a little. I think I was high strung kid, and I put so much unnecessary pressure on myself. So to younger Dre, “Dude, it’s gonna be alright. Drop your shoulders down, keep your head up, unclench your fist, breathe. You are on the right track, there are and will be so many people to help you. You are going to be able to bring so much joy into people’s lives and live a pretty amazing one yourself. Drink water and invest in google. But if not, it’s ok just enjoy the ride.”
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I think the industry, any industry, but more so magic is rooted in so much history, that it has associated with a certain look and style of magician. When you think magician, historically, people would think old white male with a tuxedo pulling rabbits from a top hat. I think there is so much space for everyone in our industry and people will gravitate towards what they like. The entire industry can NOT look and act the same, otherwise it would’ve been dead a long time ago. Magic breeds creativity, so why can’t we apply that sort of thinking not to just our material but by the way we see and more importantly how we treat things, ideas and people who are different.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I don’t want people to remember what I did, or what I said. I think I want to be remembered by how something I did; a show, a conversation, a piece of content, made them feel. If I could affect someone’s life, even for a short moment, in a positive way, then I think I did my job.
