We’re looking forward to introducing you to Karen Turadek. Check out our conversation below.
Karen, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A typical day begins with dropping the kids off at school, followed by teaching at my preschool. Afterward, I take the kids to softball and Baseball practices, then I enjoy coming back home to work on planning new products.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Karen Ofelia, the founder and creative mind behind Ofelia City East Shop. What began as a small idea has grown into a dedicated online shop focused on sustainable, long-lasting accessories for both kids and adults. I believe that great design should never come at the expense of the planet, which is why every item I create is thoughtfully crafted to be durable, reusable, and far from landfill-bound.
Our most-loved products include our reusable toiletry bags—made to stand up to everyday life—along with our growing collection of hair ties, small pouches, and other practical accessories. I’m currently designing a new line just for young children, and I can’t wait to share what’s coming next.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was when I became a mom. In that moment, I realized just how strong, capable, and grounded I truly was. Stepping into motherhood gave me a sense of purpose and confidence unlike anything I had ever experienced—it showed me that I could love fiercely, protect deeply, and rise to any challenge that came my way.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes—when I became a mom and was trying to balance work and motherhood.
There were moments when the pressure felt overwhelming, when I questioned whether I could keep up with everything I was trying to juggle. The exhaustion, the expectations, and the constant pull in every direction made me feel like giving up more than once. But I kept going—because my love for my child and my belief in the life I was building pulled me forward.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. I try to stay true to myself, because it’s really important to show the real you.
The version of me that people see is the same person I am privately—honest, grounded, and doing my best. I believe that authenticity matters, and I don’t want to present anything other than who I truly am.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people will say that I was a good listener, a true friend, someone who genuinely cared for them, and that I could always make them laugh.
That I made people feel seen, supported, and a little lighter just by being myself.
