Julie Crone of Newport Beach on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Julie Crone shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Julie, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Lately, I’ve been soaking up the last moments of summer. One of my favorite days was taking my dog on a kayak around the bay with one of my sons. I’ve also loved spending time at the beach, watching my three boys surf and enjoy the ocean—it’s such a simple joy that fills me with gratitude.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Julie Crone, an abstract artist based in Newport Beach, where the ocean and coastal landscape continually inspire my work. I’ve been painting since childhood, earned my BFA, and studied fine art in Florence, Italy. My pieces are known for their abstract layered canvas and textured surfaces, paired with neutral and coastal-inspired palettes that invite a personal connection. I’m currently creating new collections that explore movement, depth, and a sense of calm. Above all, I want the viewer to feel a sense of peace and connection when they experience my work.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I’ve always been a creator and a passionate artist at heart. After college, I worried about making ends meet and didn’t want to become the “starving artist” we always hear about, so I built a successful career in Interior Design instead. While I loved that work, I never had enough time to paint and pursue my true dream. After my father passed away, I knew I wanted to honor both of my parents, who were my biggest supporters, by fully committing to painting and selling my art. In a way, it’s come full circle, as many interior designers now admire my work and purchase commissions for their clients. Like any career, it’s a constant balance between work and family, but I’m grateful every day that I get to follow my passion.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self to trust your talent and follow your passion without so much fear. The practical path might feel safer in the moment, but the joy that comes from doing what you truly love is worth every risk. Believe in yourself, you’re capable of more than you think.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Hands down, anyone who knows me would say that, above all, my family comes first. Spending time with my husband, our three teenage sons, and our favorite family member Hazel, our dog, is truly my happiest place. Whether it’s cheering my boys on at the beach while they surf, playing volleyball or rowing, taking Hazel for a walk on the boardwalk, or just hanging out together at home, those moments mean the most to me. My friends would also tell you I love traveling and creating meaningful memories, and always make try to make time for the people (and pup) I love.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Absolutely. I believe doing my best is about honoring myself and the work I put in, not just seeking praise. Even though I’m an abstract artist, I’m still a bit of a perfectionist almost to a fault. The saying, “don’t let perfect be the enemy of good” really resonates with me. Since art is subjective, I know not everyone will connect with my work, and that’s okay. I try not to let that discourage me; it actually makes it even sweeter when I find the collectors who truly connect with what I create.
