Juanita Carrillo of Los Angeles (mid-city) on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Juanita Carrillo and have shared our conversation below.

Juanita, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Well, recently over the summer I have been to a good number of music concerts. I love music and in the past I have enjoyed some concerts but this year I did more than usual which brought me so much joy.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello my name is Juanita Carrillo I am a hair stylist ,make-up artist and have been in this business for for about 30 years. I absolutely love my craft making women and men feel a tremendous joy when leaving my chair. I truly enjoy transformations some people can’t even imagine what a new cut or style can do for their lives and that’s where my joy come is in at. I still continue to create new visions for my clients but now working on including styling for men and women because I also love fashion. My mom was a seamstress when I was growing up so the love for clothes and shoes has been a major part of my life and so now as I move on I want to include a space for me to style hair, faces ,and the clothes for events, dinners, weddings etc..

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
Ok so from my beginnings my mom was the hardest working woman I know. My dad was not in the picture anymore because of his abusive behavior towards all of us so the strength that I watched my mom have to leave him and take care of 2 kids alone is what gave me the energy and mindset to intake all my mother did and use it for my own future. She was a nurse , seamstress, she crochet and knitted and also an amazing cook. So to juggle all those things while raising us is was what gave me the drive to push and work hard for what I want.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
One kind thing i could say to my younger self would be STAY STRONG and DONT BE AFRAID. I had to capitalize that because the abuse that I experienced from my father made me a very scary child and I was always afraid of things in life. I deal and have dealt with anxiety all my life so if I wasn’t afraid so much as a child I think I would have made better decisions and would have been a lil further in my business dreams, but this is where you learn that there is a time for everything so I think with my experiences whether positive or negative is what made me the woman I am today. My future endeavors are happening at the right time these days. I have grown to be stronger and more resilient so the time for my dreams is now.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is me. I cannot and will not ever show a different side than what you see from me on social media or behind any door. I always try and maintain a genuine me. There is no other way for me to live but in realness and authenticity. That’s the best way to live and feel free because that’s the only way I know how to live. Real real real me forever!!

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What light inside you have you been dimming?
I will say that I have been dimming the light of me pushing for my own greatness. I have had so many ideas and things that I know will make my life better but that fear and also worrying about what others will think is what slowed me down. I have lost money and I really need it because of my fears, so these days I am working each day to bring that light to the forefront. Stopping procrastination is the biggest deal for me and once I continue to push the world will get to see me shine ✨ this time.
