Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Howard.
Hi Sierra, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
In 2020, I was working at my local Starbucks in Carson, CA as a barista. I came across this book called “How To Be A Bad Ass,” By Jen Cincero that heavily inspired me to pursue entrepreneurship. Her book briefly discussed the common misconception that the average everyday people aren’t allowed to step in the space of entrepreneurship. She debunked the belief so strongly and gave examples of success stories from people who came from nothing and i resonated with it. I always wanted to work for myself, and at the time, I was experiencing a spiritual awakening. I always loved jewelry and wanted to create, manufacture and sell online. I met a girl online named Liv Portio who also owns a jewelry business who was taking off successfully. I learned a few tips from her and started my journey. At first, I launched a jewelry store catering to spiritual aesthetics (crystals, zodiacs, etc.) Later on, I rebranded and created a jewelry store catering to the ocean. I always loved the ocean, and went to school to be a marine biologist. I resonate with everything coastal and oceanic. Without getting rid of my initial slogan, “Jewelry For The Divine Feminine” I switched it to “Jewelry made For Sirens” ; still connecting women to their higher selves and femininity through my Gold filled jewelry pieces carefully created to make women feel beautiful and connected to aquatic nature.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It wasn’t always a smooth road. I struggled with marketing at first. I couldn’t figure out a way to perfect the deliverance of my brand niche until I started taking inspirations from vision boards on Pinterest. I started to curate my feeds on social media to attract my audience which, admittedly, took a while to do. I also struggled financially to keep up with my brand around 2023. Around the time, we started to experience a major shift in the economy that almost made me quit SCJ but I pushed through. With my new marketing strategies, I was able to attract more customers as time went on.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about SierrasCollections ?
Sierra’s Collections is a Black woman-owned jewelry brand inspired by the beauty, mystery, and timeless elegance of the ocean. In a space where coastal jewelry rarely reflects diverse founders and perspectives, the brand was built to offer a fresh take on seaside luxury—one that feels elevated, feminine, and effortlessly wearable every day. Each piece is thoughtfully chosen to capture the essence of life by the water. Sculptural shells, delicate florals, to shimmering starfish, sunlit textures, and organic shapes inspired by the shoreline. We sell oceanic jewelry for girls who are chasing summer year-round or who simply want to carry a piece of the coast with them. Our jewelry is designed to bring that feeling into your everyday life. I’m most proud of my consistency over the course of 6 years, my magazine features such as Voyage, Vanity Fair, and Bold Journey, and my first Paris Fashion Show invitation as a designer in 2028. I’m growing more and more each day on my Instagram account and I’m grateful for everyone who has supported SCJ.
What makes you happy?
Pursing my dreams makes me happy. A lot of people give up on their dreams and regret it later. I have put the comfort of a standard 9-5 on hold to pursue this. As a woman who loves stability, this makes me happy because I put my average comforts on hold to pour into my passion and have been rewarded because of it. To step outside of the norm and pursue something bigger and reach a grand level of success for myself and my family is all I ever want to do.
