Today we’d like to introduce you to Erik Maes.
Hi Erik, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Erik Maes and I am an LA-based jewelry designer hand-making my fresh collection of gold and sterling silver rings, earrings, necklaces, cuffs, bangles, and buckles. I utilize casting methods and sculptural techniques both common and creative. Having first been exposed to cuttlebone and lost-wax casting at UW-Madison, I’ve worked ever since to cultivate my expression within jewelry design by pushing these processes and developing my own unique relationship with cuttlebone itself. My creations are often inspired by natural textures, ocean waves, topography, rivers, flower buds, and even tree bark. Cast from sculpted wax or carved cuttlebone, I attempt to create uniquely beautiful textures contained within familiar silhouettes. IAdditionally, I’ve upcycled vintage elements to create a modern take on signet rings. The innovative style and expert craftsmanship is evident in each piece from Maes Jewelry. This jewelry line must truly be worn to be fully appreciated. One view cannot capture the three dimensional and tactile quality of this work.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Once I left the entertainment industry and focused entirely on my jewelry business, I saw a steady growth in sales and popularity. The last year has been difficult however as the costs of tariffs and rising metal prices take effect. There are always challenges as a small business owner, but each obstacle is a learning experience and an opportunity for evolution. For example, recently I’ve seen an uptick in custom wedding ring requests and many of these pieces will use stones I haven’t set before.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Maes Jewelry can be found online at erikmaes.com or in person every Saturday and Sunday at the LA Flea located in Silverlake at 2511 W. Sunset Blvd. 90026 from 9a-4p. I offer a large array or uniquely handmade rings, necklaces, and more each custom made for you. Visit me online or come and see me in person to place a custom order, get your fingers expertly sized, or to have your own jewelry repaired or replated.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
True results come from committing fully to a project or a passion. For a long time I straddled a life between editing movie trailers and my fledgling jewelry work. Each suffered from true potential as my time and creative energy was split. It wasn’t until the pandemic forced my editing company to close that I realized I could sell my jewelry to the community every weekend at flea markets. And that commitment has kept me producing at a high rate every week since.
