Today we’d like to introduce you to Darren Fishman.
Hi Darren, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m originally from Australia and came to the US on a permanent basis around 6 years ago after 10 years of regular visits. In my time here I’ve run my own fashion brand while heading up the Desert Society agency which specializes in brand marketing and interior design. When I came up with the idea to open a gelateria in Palm Springs, naturally the marketing and design skills gave me a head start on developing the brand and the design of the shop itself.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest struggles was securing a prime location as Palm Springs is very tightly held as far as the downtown area is concerned. And of course red tape is always a factor, working to slow things down! You need to deal with planning departments, building departments, engineering departments, health departments, fire departments, and the like. And waiting for permits and sign-offs can be frustrating when you just want to get those doors open and present yourself to the public. But we got there!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Gelato-A-Go-Go?
Gelato-A-Go-Go is a super funky gelateria situated in the desert tourist city of Palm Springs in Southern California, about 2 hours east of Los Angeles.
We’ve now been open a year and the reception from locals and tourists alike has been wonderful, with people loving our colorful and fun decor, our enthusiastic and friendly team, and of course the taste of our huge selection of all-natural artisanal gelatos and sorbets – 32 in fact, with both dairy and vegan options to keep everyone happy.
What sets us apart is our retro Italian theming and gelato product, amongst a sea of American-orientated ice cream shops. From the uniforms, through our soundtrack, to the way we greet our guests, and of course the decor and branding itself in red, white and green, we’ve gone all out. Including a disco ball and a vespa scooter!
We also now have a mobile gelato cart that we take to various street fairs and events, as well as private functions like weddings and the like.
Our marketing also has a fun and funky vibe, not taking ourselves too seriously. After all we are marketing gelato, but really selling “joy” and so we are here to put a smile on your face. We are super proud of how cohesive and consistent our branding is, led by our sassy big red lips logo that gives us a little edgier vibe than the competition. Similar to our neon sign that sits proudly on the wall with the sound philosophy of “Life is for licking”!
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Come and visit our super funky 70s-inspired gelateria when in Palm Springs. We’re on the corner of Tahquitz Canyon Way and Indian Canyon Drive. Look for the red and white striped awnings and the big red lips above the door! We have the largest range of flavors around, plus Italian pastries, gelato-based smoothies and shakes, plus hot and cold espresso coffees to enjoy… and great music.
