Goldwyn Thandrayen of Los Angeles on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Goldwyn Thandrayen. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Goldwyn , it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Right now, I’m literally being called to do two things: (1) play shows and (2) fight competitively. Both are scary in their own way. I’m a musician first, and as much as fighting is fun, I have to hold back from getting too tempted by it.
Playing open mics is something I’ve been avoiding for a few months now. I keep telling myself I’m not ready, but my peers and mentors think it might just be fear.
It’s a strange feeling, especially because I’ve never had a problem jumping into something new—whether it was a last-minute show or trying out a new song on stage. I never cared if I nailed it or bombed. But now that I understand more about what makes a great show, and what it takes to truly be great, I’ve set a higher standard for myself. I want it to feel like a perfect dive. Still, somewhere in the back of my mind, I wonder if that’s just fear talking.
So, I’ve made a promise to myself: before the end of the year, I’ll do it. I’ll play the live show—and I’ll publish it.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey, I’m Goldwyn Thandrayen — a guitar player turned singer, and now a singer-songwriter. Originally from Mauritius, I left home after high school and lived in Glasgow, Scotland. Later, I moved to New York City, Montreal, Boston, and now Los Angeles.
My travels and exploration in music led me to create music videos, which eventually pulled me into directing — and while in LA, I also started modeling.
Outside of music, I train in BJJ, Muay Thai, Boxing, and Wrestling.
Right now, I’m putting together my acoustic act, but I’ve also been contacted recently about doing more Psychocide (my rock band) music videos and songs. So who knows — maybe the band will be back.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Definitely the ones I’ve had with my mentors and coaches. They gave me perspective — not just on who I am, but who I can become. I love my friends and family, but it’s hard to get real answers from people who aren’t walking the same path.
You’ve got to vet your mentors — see what they’ve achieved and make sure it lines up with where you want to go. Once that’s clear, it becomes a relationship built on mutual respect. I don’t question their methods, I just learn and apply.
In the last two years, I’ve grown in ways that might’ve taken ten on my own.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
All the time. But then I ask myself — what else would I do? If I could do anything I wanted, what would it be? And it always comes back to playing my guitar and writing songs. Ain’t that weird?

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Music, and I think my ex-girlfriend would agree.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Saving money, go liquid and LFG!
