Frankie Midnight shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Frankie, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I am walking a path of becoming a true on-screen artist. At times it feels like i’m wandering without any real direction yet my path is clear. I don’t have an agent or manager with connects in the major markets but everything I’ve recently booked have been through self, making connects, relationships, and strong bookings. I’m purely and solely moving in faith, blindfolded and it is a struggle that I constantly work on everyday.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey yall, I’m Frankie Midnight and I am an actor from Miami, FL. I’ve been acting since the age of 11, starting in theater. I took a break from acting to pursue music full-time, becoming a music composer and multi-musician of guitar, bass, piano, drums, harmonica, and vocals. I returned to theater on and off until fully returning in 2022 where i landed my first agent and transitioned from stage to screen. Since 2022, iv’e worked in over 20 films as supporting and lead which includes 5 award winning student films, 8 award winning short films, 7 feature films including the award winning major indie, “The School Duel”, and directorial debut, “Mumble: Fate of a Lost Icon” (streaming on Prime, Tubi, Fawesome) as well as 13 major commercials including KFC, Paramount + Footlocker, Top Golf, and Universal Orlando Resort.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Making my first movie in the fall of 2023 with no money, no fully developed script, or pre planned strategy. The movie is called, “Mumble: Fate of a Lost Icon”, a mockumentary comedy about the rise, fall, and omission of the creator of mumble rap, “Young Guttah Nutz”, a fictional character. At that time, I was feeling left behind in my industry and needed to book a lead in a feature on major streaming to build my credits. While waiting for my agent to send me something, I began writing an outline of what would be “Mumble”. Once i completed the main story outline, I jumped into filming with the little resources I had which was a good camera, talented friends who would be actors in my film, and decent editing skills. When the filming and editing was completed, I submitted the film into the Miami Film Festival where it was accepted and screened to a sold out theater. From there, I was able to distribute my film to major streaming platforms including Prime Video, Tubi TV, and Fawesome TV. That moment reassured me to trust my instincts, believe in myself and take my career into my own hands.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
When I was burned by my first agent over financial disputes, the experience left me scared and untrusting. Instead of allowing my career to be stifled by that moment, I began studying the business, learning about contracts, payroll employers, talent reports, etc. I also joined SAG-AFTRA which empowered me as an onscreen artist and opened me up to more opportunities and resources relating to legal representation and business.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’m currently writing a script for a thriller/ dark comedy feature about the psychological trauma of a black veteran, caused by the atrocities of his ancestral history. I’m very excited about the project because it will answer a lot of questions many may have about the African American community and why we are the way we are in America. My personal cinematic love letter to Black folks and overall filmgoers.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Worrying. Worry creates doubt which goes against my faith in God and faith in my abilities. Actors are constantly going through emotional rollercoasters with constant rejection, life-changing bookings, career shifts, and business vulnerabilities. Worry has stiffled me and faith has propelled me. I’ve accomplished so much within a short timespan with much more to accomplish and look forward to!
