Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Johnston
Hi Susan , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in New England, a hearty diverse landscape rich in history. The four seasons allowed me to explore the outdoor world in many different ways, even ice storms! The Italian side of the family was boisterous and outwardly loving, on my Dad’s side of the family, extremely reserved. This showed me immediately how different people and their experiences are and how they can, with a little love work together. This is the basis for how i believe, all ages, all cutures are weclomed.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Although I wouldn’t change anything, being altruistic as a child did come with some heavy downsides on the nature of humanity. I also learned that people doing not nice things often justify themselves. That at the end of the day, we are all trying to get through the day. It has taken a lifetime of work to discern what to pivot from, what to let go and what to address head on.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m known as an “out of the box thinker” and implementer of change. That can take various forms. Basically, if there is a need and a blank space between two things, I fill it. For example, I noticed people were having a hard time with resources in Los Angeles so I compiled a resource book “how to make it in hollywood the must have resource guide to navigate the film world when your on your way up” (on Barnes & Noble). I noticed creators having a hard time broadcasting in a certain time window to be eligible to submit for EMMY® consideration – so I created a system that allows us to do that (via www.selectservicesfilms.com). We (anyone on my team) constantly connect people – a publisher with an expert in bitcoin, created a touring series for 2 artists, etc.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
There are two things I do to do my best in life/otherwise.
I travel and engage with where i am as if i just moved there, it immerses me into the culture much more quickly as i navigate exploring.
Because I am in media for a living, I watch and read content daily from all over the globe at all different levels. On a side note, it helps me understand the pulse of the world at this moment, what people write about and share tells a lot.
