Daily Inspiration: Meet Miriam Cervantes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miriam Cervantes.

Miriam, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always been interested in the arts ever since I could remember, the visual arts specifically have always been the most prominent in my life as an artist. The world of performing arts was something of interest, but I did not venture into them until college. But even in that world I was able to find myself back into the visual arts in multiple ways, and I’ve continued ever since.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t really been a smooth road at all, from losing my inspiration/passion as an artist for quite some time, to my battle with depression and anxiety, it’s been anything but a smooth road for me. Another struggle of mine, is choosing a path for myself, what I mean is settling with something and just focusing on that for a career/study. I do anything but settle on one path, I don’t want to stick one path. This unending curiosity, and pursuit of knowledge is both helpful and a curse at times.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
It’s difficult to choose or say one thing I do or specialize in, but I have worked in the world of scenic painting, photoshop, drawing and painting, and dramaturgy. I honestly I think I most known for being a creative person, for having a fascination and love for the arts and researching anything I’m interested in, basically I’m known for being a nerd. What I’m most proud of is my never ending curiosity, it’s helped me in the long run but also backfired here and there. What I mean by this is because I’m always curious and eager to learn something new, I tend to venture outside of my “field” and explore a new medium, sometimes I’ll like it, and sometimes I won’t. Aside from my curiosity, as an artist I believe that it’s really important to build one’s artistic/general skills, it not only makes you better artist, but it helps you stand out from others, especially if you’re trying to get out there and build a name for yourself; it’s not an easy/fair world out there for artists, but that doesn’t mean you have to give it up, building different kinds of skill sets and knowing the right people can help you and your art reach new horizons, at least that’s what I believe. Now sometimes my never ending curiosity does backfire, it can distract me at times and sometimes I’ll end up researching something and won’t get done what I had to do for the day.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was a very timid, quiet kind of kid, at least according to my mother, but in parent teacher conferences the teachers would always mention to my mother that I was very ambitious, comical, loud, a big goofball that would make others laugh. Honestly, I still am these two different people, depending who I’m with and what mood I’m in. As a kid, my dream jobs varied, I either wanted to be a veterinarian, a zoologist, a librarian, or work in the arts somehow. A veterinarian and a zoologist because both careers involved working with animals, and I’ve loved animals since day 1. I loved the fact that veterinarians helped heal animals making sure they were okay, and zoologists get to study animals, learn more about them, in turn helping them if need be. But eventually I did the research to what I need to study in college in order to become a vet or a zoologist, and they both require mathematics, and I hate math with a passion, I was never good with it, and the highest grade i ever received in mathematics was a C. A librarian because I’ve always loved reading and as a kid I thought what librarians did was so cool, I saw them as the keepers and guardians of knowledge. I don’t know exactly why I didn’t decide to be a librarian, frankly I can’t remember, but the love for reading and the library itself remained. When it came to drawing and painting I ventured into here and there as a kid, I did always find it cool how someone could just look at something or think of something and bring their vision to life through a drawing or a painting, and I enjoyed seeing how differently people would bring their ideas/visions to life, as in the different type of art styles. It wasn’t until college that I started to take art a little more seriously, since it became my major.
