Daily Inspiration: Meet Mal Felix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mal Felix.

Hi Mal, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey in fitness started more than 15 years ago, but for me, it has always been about much more than working out. I became fascinated with how the human body works, how it adapts, and how the right combination of training, nutrition, education, and discipline can completely change someone’s life. That interest led me to study Human and Exercise Science and gain experience in both clinical and performance-based environments.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to wear a lot of different hats. I’ve spent more than a decade as a personal trainer and coach, worked in education teaching Health, Sports Medicine, and Kinesiology, and developed programs for everyone from beginners to athletes. Teaching became a huge part of who I am as a coach because it taught me that it isn’t enough to simply tell someone what to do—I want people to understand why they’re doing it and eventually have the confidence to take ownership of their own health.

Bodybuilding also became an important part of my journey. I took my passion for training to the competitive level, eventually becoming a professional bodybuilder. I’ve coached myself through multiple competitions, which taught me an entirely different level of discipline, preparation, nutrition, and attention to detail. That experience has helped shape the way I coach others today, whether their goal is stepping on stage, losing body fat, building muscle, improving performance, or simply becoming healthier and more confident.

My career eventually moved beyond one-on-one coaching and into leadership. Today, I serve as the Fitness Department Manager at The Paseo Club, where I oversee and help develop personal training, group exercise, Pilates, performance training, small-group programming, and other fitness initiatives. A major focus of my role has been building stronger systems, developing trainers, improving the member experience, and creating programming that makes fitness feel like an active and meaningful part of the club community.

At the same time, I’ve continued building Armored Coaching, my personal coaching brand. Armored Coaching represents what I’ve learned throughout my career: Strength, Discipline, and Performance. My goal is to provide individualized coaching rather than one-size-fits-all programs—meeting people where they are and creating a realistic path toward where they want to be.

Outside of my professional life, I’m also a husband and father of four, which has given me an even greater appreciation for balance, responsibility, and purpose. Fitness is something I love, but ultimately, my career has become about people. I love teaching, developing others, building programs, and helping people realize that they are capable of more than they thought.

Looking back, I don’t see my story as one straight path. Coaching, education, bodybuilding, leadership, and entrepreneurship have all built on one another. Each chapter has given me something that I use today. And I still feel like I’m building. My goal is to continue growing as a leader and coach, expand Armored Coaching, and use everything I’ve learned to help more people become stronger—not only physically, but in the discipline and confidence they carry into the rest of their lives.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. As a first-generation American, I’ve faced plenty of roadblocks, but one thing I’ve learned about myself is that I will always find a way to overcome them.

One of my earliest challenges was simply getting through college financially. While attending Florida State University, there were times when I worked two jobs just to make ends meet while still carrying the responsibility of my schoolwork. Graduating was something I had to truly work for, and that experience taught me discipline, resilience, and how to keep moving forward even when things aren’t easy.

After college came another reality. I entered the professional world and quickly realized that I didn’t necessarily have the network or connections that would automatically open the door to the career or salary I wanted. Instead of allowing that to stop me, I started creating opportunities for myself, including starting my own business and building my career from the ground up.

At the same time, I was building a family, growing professionally, and learning how to balance being a husband, father, entrepreneur, and leader. None of it has been easy, and there have certainly been moments when the road looked very different from what I originally imagined.

But someone once told me, “Nothing good is easy,” and that has stayed with me. Looking back, many of the obstacles I faced are the same experiences that developed my work ethic and shaped the person I am today. I’ve learned that you may not always get to choose the road in front of you, but you can choose whether you allow the roadblocks to stop you.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My life and professional career have always been centered around fitness, health, education, and helping people become better versions of themselves. Over the years, I’ve grown from being a personal trainer and educator into a leader, mentor, professional bodybuilder, and entrepreneur.

I’m known as a leader who leads from behind. To me, leadership isn’t about always being the person in front or receiving the recognition—it’s about helping other people become better. Whether I’m developing fitness professionals who want to improve their ability to serve others or working directly with someone who is looking to transform their own life, I want to give people the knowledge, tools, and confidence to succeed.

What also sets me apart is that I practice what I preach. As a bodybuilder, I get to physically express the discipline, consistency, and passion for fitness that I encourage in others. I understand what it means to set a difficult goal, structure your life around it, make sacrifices, and continue showing up even when motivation isn’t there. Those lessons influence the way I coach and lead.

Education is another major part of who I am. With my background in Human and Exercise Science and my experience teaching Health, Sports Medicine, and Kinesiology, I’ve always believed that a great coach shouldn’t just tell someone what to do—they should help them understand why they’re doing it. I want the people I work with to become more knowledgeable and confident in themselves along the way.

Now I’m working to expand those boundaries through Armored Coaching. After years of coaching people face-to-face, I want to make my experience and approach available beyond my immediate community through online coaching across the country and eventually internationally. Armored Coaching is built around Strength, Discipline, and Performance, with individualized coaching for people who want to transform their physiques, improve their health, compete, or simply reach a level they haven’t been able to achieve on their own.

What I’m most proud of isn’t one title, position, or bodybuilding accomplishment. I’m most proud of the people I’ve helped along the way. Seeing someone I’ve coached transform, watching someone I’ve taught use that knowledge to help others, or seeing someone I’ve mentored become a stronger leader is what makes the work meaningful to me.

Ultimately, I want my impact to extend beyond my own accomplishments. My success is measured by how many people become better because I was able to help them along their journey.

How do you think about happiness?
My family is definitely the number one thing that makes me happy. I get to do life with my beautiful wife, who works incredibly hard every day to care for me and our family, and I’m grateful for the life we’ve built together with our children.

As much as I love my career, fitness, and everything I’m working toward professionally, none of it means as much without my family. They give me purpose, keep me grounded, and remind me why I work as hard as I do. Being present for my wife and kids, watching our children grow, creating memories together, and knowing that we’re building a life as a family is what brings me the most joy.
