Today we’d like to introduce you to Kari Kari Petrosyan.
Hi Kari Kari, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I never had a perfect plan for my life. I simply kept following whatever made me curious.
My real name is Karine, although most people now know me as Kari. Long before Instagram became my career and before I knew anything about AI, I was traveling the world as a model. I spent more than ten years in the industry and was represented by IMG Models and Storm Model Management.
Modeling took me everywhere. I lived in London for four years, then Paris for four years and later Dubai for five. In between, I was constantly flying to Milan, New York, Tokyo and other cities for Fashion Weeks, castings and shoots. For a long time, my life fitted inside a suitcase.
I shot a WWD cover in New York and editorials for L’Officiel Italia, ELLE España, Vogue Italia, British Vogue and Vogue Japan. I became a face of UNIQLO in Japan, worked with Prada and walked for designers including Balmain, Lanvin, Valentino, Rick Owens, Dsquared2, Christopher Kane and Alexander McQueen.
It sounds glamorous when I list it now, but modeling also taught me how to handle rejection, uncertainty and constant change. You could be working on an incredible shoot one day and wondering about your next opportunity the day after. It made me independent and disciplined, but it also made me curious about everything happening behind the camera.
I started Instagram around 14 years ago simply as a hobby. There was no strategy or business plan. I was traveling constantly and wanted somewhere to share the places I visited, the clothes I loved and little moments from my life. Because my world was already international, I wrote in English, and people from different countries slowly began following my journey.
The real turning point came when I became a mother nine years ago. My daughter changed my priorities and gave me an even stronger reason to build something of my own. I began teaching myself everything I could about Instagram—how content works, why people connect with certain stories and how an online community grows. I learned through trial and error, often figuring things out late at night by myself.
What began as a travel diary eventually became a community of more than 4.5 million people. A large part of my audience is in the United States, alongside the UK, France, the UAE and many other countries. I have since collaborated with names including Armani Beauty, Dolce & Gabbana, Jacob & Co., Jaeger-LeCoultre, L’Oréal, Samsung and Netflix, as well as international destinations such as Visit Macao.
The next major change came when I discovered artificial intelligence. It gave me the creative freedom I had been looking for since my modeling days. I was no longer waiting for someone else to choose the location, build the set or decide what was possible. I could take an idea from my imagination and create an entire visual world around it.
Today, I work as an AI Creative Director and digital creator, and I am building ARMA, my own creative house. It feels as though everything has come full circle: modeling taught me how to exist inside an image, and now I imagine and direct the image myself.
Recently, another part of my identity has become increasingly important to me. My father is Armenian, and after spending so much of my life around the world, I started returning to Armenia more often. I wanted to understand that part of myself—not only through family history, but by being there, experiencing the culture and creating my own connection to it.
My journey was never a straight line. I went from international model to mother, from sharing travel pictures as a hobby to building a global community, and from standing in front of someone else’s camera to creating worlds of my own.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest part has been building stability in industries that are naturally unpredictable.
For many years, my opportunities depended on other people’s decisions. I could prepare perfectly, work hard and still be told no for reasons completely outside my control. Learning not to connect rejection with my value was difficult, but necessary.
Later, I faced the challenge of building something independently without a roadmap or a large team behind me. I had to understand constantly changing platforms, make creative and business decisions, negotiate partnerships and remain consistent even when the results were unpredictable. Much of that learning happened privately through mistakes that nobody else saw.
There is also a personal cost to building a public life. People see the finished image, but not the pressure, uncertainty or amount of work behind it. I have had to learn how to share enough to create a real connection while still protecting parts of my life and remaining present for my daughter.
Another challenge has been being taken seriously beyond the label of “influencer.” My work involves strategy, creative direction, technology and business, but people sometimes make assumptions based only on what they see on social media. I learned not to waste energy trying to convince everyone. The quality and evolution of my work have to speak for me.
The road has taught me patience and self-trust. I cannot control every opportunity, opinion or algorithm, but I can control whether I continue learning, creating and moving forward.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work is about turning an identity into a clear creative concept. Before I create anything, I try to understand what makes a person, brand or destination special. I don’t want to place everyone inside the same aesthetic or repeat an idea simply because it performed well before.
I specialize in concepts that bring together creativity and strategy. The final result needs to feel original, but it also needs to communicate something clearly. I think about who the audience is, what they should understand and what they should remember about the subject.
Travel has had a big influence on the way I work. Living in different countries taught me that the same idea can be understood very differently depending on culture. I pay attention to these differences and try to create work that can connect internationally without losing its personality.
I am most proud that I have turned my experience into something I can now use to support other people and businesses. I can look at a brand or personal profile and quickly understand what feels unclear, what is missing and what could make it stronger.
What sets me apart is that I don’t separate creativity from results. I care about the artistic side, but I also understand audience behavior, positioning and commercial goals. The best work should have personality and purpose at the same time.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I’m planning to visit Los Angeles soon, so I’m excited to experience the city personally. I already have many friends there, and I feel connected to LA through the brands and creative people I work with in the United States.
I’m especially interested in discovering the Armenian community. Knowing that such a large and established Armenian community exists in Los Angeles makes the city feel familiar to me even before my first visit.
I also really enjoy working with people and brands from the US. In my experience, they understand the value of social media, move quickly with new ideas and are open to the possibilities of AI. That makes creative collaborations exciting and easy to develop.
It would be unfair to say what I like least before spending time there myself, although my friends have warned me about the traffic! I prefer to visit with an open mind and form my own opinion.
