Daily Inspiration: Meet Drew Dorsey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Drew Dorsey.

Hi Drew, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Originally from the Bay Area, I moved to Los Angeles in 2012 to collect what I like to call my favorite receipt- aka a degree from Loyola Marymount University. I moved with aspirations to pursue a career in the industry like everyone else and their mama in LA. Then with a billion internships under my belt I started out in entertainment news right out of college as a writer for a YouTube channel called Clevver. I soon became a host where I covered several red carpets, press junkets, interviewed many of my favorite humans I grew up watching on tv and flexed my ability to never shut up in front of a camera on the number of shows our channel had. From there I went on to host for several outlets including Cosmopolitan, Uproxx, IMDb, and more. Hosting led to content creation, which led to brand deals, which resulted in a friend telling me I’m professionally photogenic, which led to becoming a signed model. If you would’ve told 10 year old me that I would one day model in a Revlon campaign and be in a Pattern commercial with Tracee Ellis Ross, I would’ve slapped someone in the face. And then I would get to tell little me that I was featured in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit magazine and she’d say did we win an Oscar too?? Like what is going on. Not yet, but we’re working on it. So far I’ve gotten to flex my acting chops in a few commercials for Hyundai, Target, Google, Amazon Alexa, a bunch of casinos lol, Honeylove, a web series, some fun skits on an NBC show or two but I would love to shift my concentration to pursuing acting (said every human in LA) and find theatrical representation to round out the team of avengers I get the privilege of having in my corner. I also have a YouTube channel for which I was able to snag a Silver Creator Award for and where I get to let my shenanigans flag fly. And apparently because I’m Forest Gumping my way through life, I also host 4 hour livestreams for different brands. So how did I get to where I am today? Through hard work, a head full of hair, solid genetics from the rents’ thankfully, and never giving up.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Anybody who chooses to pursue a career in the entertainment industry is a tad off their rocker and I’m no exception. Rejection is part of the game and while some no’s hurt more than others, they give you the tough skin that is necessary to survive this whirlwind. I don’t want to call it luck, but I can’t say I haven’t been blessed. I started working in the industry when I was still in college and somehow have been able to do it full time consistently all these years without losing my mind (completely- knock on wood) but there have definitely been road blocks along the way. I’ve been laid off, been stressed about where my next check is coming from, had to pretend to like people (kidding, kind of). It definitely hasn’t always been easy and I’ve been very lucky to have met some pretty amazing people along the way who have mentioned my name in rooms I wasn’t in and have put me up for many opportunities that were able to keep me afloat and led to the next. I also used to have terrible acne which is why I now have a great personality. Character building.

Although I’ve accomplished some pretty incredible milestones so far professionally, I’ll say- in that same vain- I’m proud of the fact that I’ve been able to separate what I do for a living from who I am as a person and not letting it dictate my worth. It’s something I used to struggle with. I think it’s easy to become an accolade list or a follower count and attach your worth to how you answer “what do you do” when someone asks you at a party. I’m proud of who I’ve become as a person and am every day becoming more and more ok with the idea of not having all of the answers, trying and failing, and figuring out this thing called life. I’m proud of the fact that I’m a good friend, an empathetic person, a little too blunt and bold, and relentlessly tenacious.
I’m also proud of my absolutely brilliant Halloween costumes.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory (collectively) are my theatre years. Ya girl loves a stage. I played the Leading Player in Pippin when I was in high school and the experience literally altered my trajectory in life and made me believe in myself.
