Conversations with Linh Luu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Linh Luu.

Hi Linh, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As the child of Vietnamese immigrants, I grew up navigating the complexities of identity in Arizona, often feeling different from those around me. Surrounded by peers who looked nothing like me and whose experiences differed greatly from my own, I spent much of my childhood searching for a sense of belonging.

It wasn’t until I arrived at college that I encountered a community of people who shared similar cultural backgrounds and experiences. Yet even then, I struggled with imposter syndrome and the pressure of fulfilling expectations that weren’t entirely my own. Like many children of immigrant parents, I was driven by a desire to make my family proud. That path initially led me toward a career in dentistry, and I pursued the pre-dental track throughout college.

After graduation, however, a series of rejections forced me to reevaluate what I truly wanted. For the first time, I allowed myself to consider a future beyond the plans I had inherited. Taking a leap of faith, I pivoted toward marketing—a decision that would ultimately bring me closer to my passions than I ever imagined.

Since 2019, I have been creating content on TikTok, producing comedy skits and relatable POV videos designed to make people laugh. What began as a creative outlet quickly became something much more meaningful. As my audience grew, I realized how much I loved creating content that entertained people, brightened their day, and fostered a sense of connection.

At the same time, another lifelong passion continued to shape my journey: food. Growing up, I was captivated by cooking competition shows, YouTube food creators, and anything related to culinary culture. Watching Ratatouille for the first time left a lasting impression on me. The film’s message—that food has the power to bring together people from every background and walk of life—deeply resonated with me.

Inspired by that belief, I began using my platform to share my dining experiences and review the restaurants and hidden gems I loved throughout California. As those videos gained traction, I discovered a unique intersection between my love for storytelling, content creation, and food. More than simply reviewing restaurants, I found joy in telling the stories behind the places, people, and experiences that make food so meaningful.

Today, I continue creating engaging, story-driven food content that helps people discover new experiences and connect through a shared love of food. While becoming a professional food critic once felt like an impossible dream reserved for fictional characters like Anton Ego, I have come to realize that through digital storytelling, that dream may be much closer than I ever imagined.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
After graduating and facing rejection, I found myself at a crossroads. I had spent years working toward a career that ultimately didn’t feel like the right fit, and stepping away from that path was incredibly difficult. I struggled with self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and the fear of disappointing my family. Choosing to pivot into marketing and content creation felt like a huge risk because there was no clear roadmap or guarantee of success.

Building a presence on social media came with its own challenges. There were many moments when videos didn’t perform well, growth felt slow, and I questioned whether I was good enough. It took time to develop confidence in my voice and trust that my passion for storytelling, entertainment, and food could become something meaningful.

Looking back, those struggles were some of the most important parts of my journey. They taught me resilience, helped me define success on my own terms, and ultimately led me to a career and creative path that feels authentic to who I am.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I currently work full-time as a marketing professional in the sports industry while also creating content focused on food and storytelling. Over the past several years, I’ve built a platform by sharing restaurant reviews, food experiences, and relatable content that helps people discover new places and connect through a shared love of food.

What I’m most proud of is taking a chance on myself and pursuing a creative path that aligns with my passions. After realizing a traditional career path wasn’t the right fit, I leaned into content creation and found a way to combine my love for storytelling, food, and community.

What sets me apart is my ability to blend the strategic mindset of a marketer with the creativity of a storyteller. Whether I’m creating content or building campaigns, my focus is always on creating authentic connections and engaging experiences for people.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
One of the biggest risks I’ve taken was walking away from the career path I had spent years preparing for. As the child of Vietnamese immigrants, pursuing dentistry felt like the safe and expected choice. After graduation and facing rejection, I had to decide whether to continue down a path that didn’t excite me or take a chance on something that did. Choosing to pursue marketing and invest time into content creation came with no guarantees, but it felt more authentic to who I was.

Looking back, that decision taught me that risk isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about trusting yourself enough to move forward even when the outcome is uncertain. Some of the best opportunities in my life, from building a platform online to creating food content, came from taking chances that initially felt uncomfortable. Because of that, I’ve learned to view risk as less of something to avoid and more as a necessary part of growth.
