Conversations with King Khazm

Today we’d like to introduce you to King Khazm.

King Khazm

Hi King, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I am an artist, emcee, music producer, and community organizer who was born and raised in Seattle, Washington. I’ve been incredibly blessed to pursue my art, music, and service to the community for over 25+ years and have built up an amazing career.

I’ve toured extensively over the years with my music and art, performing, speaking, facilitating workshops, and more throughout the United States, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Brazil, Malaysia, Netherlands, and abroad. I am passionate about cultural exchange opportunities and using hip-hop as a platform for community empowerment, education, and social awareness.

I am co-founder and executive director of a nonprofit called 206 Zulu, manager of a 115-year-old community space and venue called Washington Hall, and serve on the boards of a disability advocacy organization called Here & Now Project and a King County grants agency called 4Culture.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I was injured in a car accident as a child and grew up using a wheelchair to navigate the world. Growing up, I learned to overcome so many obstacles in life, from ongoing health issues related to my disability, overcoming the ills of gangs, violence, alcoholism, and various aspects of inner-city life. Through it all, I have been able to channel my imagination and overcome these challenges through creative expression, music, and art. I am so fortunate to have been able to live this long and do the amazing things I’ve done and continue to do in life. I am continually looking to expand my horizons, advocate and support those in need, and push the boundaries of what is possible.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work in a range of capacities as a visual artist, emcee, and music producer. As an emcee and music producer, I have collaborated with artists such as Abstract Rude, Afu-Ra, Def-I, Eli Almic, Gabriel Teodros, Kurtis Blow, Sadat X, and Sean Price. I perform as a solo artist as well as groups Mid-Century Modern, Cyphalliance, and Mad Krew. My most recent project, “Stolen Moments” by Mid-Century Modern, has been receiving national attention on college radio this year and has landed #184 on the NACC Top 200, #7 on the NACC Top Hip Hop, and #1 on RapAttackLives Top 30.
