Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacquelyn Lin
Hi Jacquelyn, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
From a young age I was known as the little artist in the family, our house was well decorated with my artworks as well as the crayon doodles on the wall. However, drawing has only been a hobby until I moved to the US at the age of 16. My high school art teacher Mrs. Fritz was the one who guided and inspired me, she unleashed my creativity and made me believe that art can be a career. Luckily I got accepted to ArtCenter College of Design BFA Illustration in 2020 and began my journey of becoming an artist.
Transforming a hobby into a professional practice was a challenging but interesting task.
During my academic years I have increased the maturity level of my techniques as well as my interpersonal skills. Creating art is not only a skill to express myself, it has also given me a sense of purpose, confidence and courage to explore the world.
Along my artistic journey, I am blessed to have lots of incredible people who motivate me, support me, encourage and guide me; People who believe in me, people who express excitement to my artworks, people who have helped me setting up my exhibitions and show up at my art booths when I’m tabling, there is more.
I am a current student preparing to graduate from Art school by the end of this year. Regardless of the type of job I get after graduation, my only goal is to keep creating art that tells inspiring stories, share them with others and hopefully they could inspire others someday.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Turning a hobby into a career can be depressing sometimes. I often experience self- doubt, a sense of worthlessness when I make mistakes on creative projects. There are many things that can kill my passion along the creative path. For me, taking a break is the key to keeping my creative motives.
I love to immerse myself in nature during my spare time, like going on a walk, visiting gardens, walking along the shoreline. This not only gives me the opportunity to be more active but also allows my brain to rest and relax, and oftentimes I get inspiration from nature.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create dynamic and colorful drawings using vibrant colors, repetitive lines and shapes. I like to tell inspiring stories through my artworks. I am currently interested in creating color pencil illustrations.
My latest works are “ The Compatible Chinese Zodiacs”.In this project I wanted to explore the relationship between the compatible zodiac animals. By choosing color pencil as the main medium I use specific colors and shape to showcase each animal’s energy and characteristics. I design the characters with semi-symmetrical and rounded compositions. I intended to show the contrast between each character and the kind of chemistry happening between them.
How do you think about luck?
Since I have decided to pursue the creative path, beside the time and efforts I’ve invested, I have met numerous people who helped me overcome obstacles and challenges. When I first entered the school, I met professor Dana. Besides all the design techniques she taught me during the lectures, she also introduced me to the world of entrepreneurship for illustrators. Dana has taken me to multiple art shows with her, taught me the importance of networking, and last but not least given me the opportunity of being her teaching assistant since I was a sophomore student. Now that I am about to graduate, there are many more incredible and generous people I have met who are just like Dana. I must be the luckiest person to have them around.
