Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie Tevelin.
Annie , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started SkinOwl 13 years ago after a pretty life-changing experience with my own skin.
At the time, I was working as a makeup artist in Los Angeles and suddenly developed severe cystic acne. I was surrounded by beauty every day, yet I couldn’t figure out what was happening to my own face. I tried everything, spent a fortune on products and treatments, and mostly just became more frustrated and disconnected from my skin.
Eventually, frustration turned into curiosity. I wanted to understand what was actually in the products I was using and why certain ingredients worked while others seemed to make things worse. That curiosity became an obsession, and I went back to school to study cosmetic chemistry.
SkinOwl really grew out of that experience. I started formulating products because I wanted to create the things I had been desperately looking for myself: thoughtful, effective skincare that didn’t overwhelm your skin or make you feel like you needed 15 products to fix yourself.
I launched SkinOwl in 2013 with no real idea of what it would become. I just knew I had made something that had changed my own skin and I wanted other people to have access to it.
Thirteen years later, we’ve grown from those first formulas into a full skincare line with 17 products and customers all over the world. But the heartbeat of the brand is still incredibly similar to where it started. SkinOwl was born from wanting answers, wanting better options and wanting people to understand their skin instead of fighting with it.
I think that’s probably why I’ve stayed so connected to it all these years. The business has evolved tremendously, but the reason I started it really hasn’t.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not. I think one of the biggest misconceptions about longevity in business is that if you’ve been around for a long time, you must have figured out some secret formula. I think the truth is that I’ve just been willing to keep figuring it out.
Thirteen years is a long time to own a business. I’ve made great decisions and terrible ones. I’ve launched products that became cult favorites and others that didn’t work. I’ve hired people, lost people, spent money I probably shouldn’t have spent, trusted the wrong things, changed direction, started over and had plenty of moments where I genuinely wondered if continuing was the right thing to do.
I’ve also had to learn how to separate my own identity from the success of the business. When you build something from nothing, especially something so personal, it’s very easy for the business doing well to mean you’re doing well and the business struggling to mean you’re failing. Learning that those two things aren’t the same has probably been one of the biggest lessons of my career.
There have been seasons where SkinOwl looked incredibly successful from the outside while I was privately trying to figure out what needed to change on the inside. I’ve learned that growth isn’t always about getting bigger. Sometimes growth is getting smaller, simplifying, letting go of something that used to work or being brave enough to admit that what you built five years ago isn’t necessarily what you should be building today.
I think the thing I’m most proud of isn’t that SkinOwl has had a smooth road. It’s that I’ve stayed curious enough to keep evolving with it. I’ve learned to listen sooner, pivot faster and trust myself a lot more than I did when I started.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At the heart of my work, I help people feel more connected to themselves.
SkinOwl specializes in thoughtful, ingredient-driven skincare that is effective without being complicated. But I think what we’re really known for is how we make people feel. We don’t approach beauty from a place of correction. We approach it with curiosity, education and care.
What I’m most proud of is that after 13 years, SkinOwl still feels deeply human. Products can be replicated and trends can be followed, but the way someone feels when they interact with your brand is much harder to duplicate. That’s the part I’m most proud of protecting.
What matters most to you? Why?
People matter most to me. How they feel, how they feel about themselves, and how they feel after spending time with me or something I’ve created.
I think that’s ultimately why I’ve stayed in this work for so long. Skincare is the vehicle, but connection has always been the point. I want people to feel seen, cared for and a little more at home in themselves than they did before.
