Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Calynn Lawrence.
Hi Dr. Calynn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
If I had to boil my story down to one core concept, it would be purpose. I truly believe that everyone has a unique life purpose located right at the intersection of their passions, talents, life circumstances, and resources. Growing up on the Southwest side of Chicago as a Black girl in an under-resourced community, I was exposed very early to the systemic barriers that trap so many in cycles of poverty and the “prison pipeline.” I saw the struggles of marginalized people firsthand. From volunteering as a youth leader and mentor in my early teens to coordinating special education events, I always knew my calling was to uplift the disenfranchised.
My professional journey actually began in the media and marketing world, long before I entered pastoral care or clinical advocacy. I recognized a critical need for authentic BIPOC representation in media to bring light to the issues facing marginalized societies. I launched Calynn Communications & Creative, eventually managing online publications like The World Times and What’s Good Weekly, and producing a successful web series.
Business acumen is vital, but my work was never just about the bottom line. I leveraged my firm’s resources to fund The Fresh Faces Project, a nonprofit initiative I founded to provide resources, networking, and exposure to underrepresented creatives and entrepreneurs trying to break into industries that often lack diversity. While my media career grew—eventually earning me honors like the 2023 Mediaperson of the Year and Entrepreneur of the Year—my personal life was shaping my next big pivot. Navigating my own chronic mental health condition, especially Major Depressive Disorder, along with the complexities of my spiritual healing journey, showed me the glaring gaps in accessible, culturally resonant mental health care.
I dedicated myself to higher education, ultimately earning a Doctorate in Pastoral/Faith-Based Counseling, alongside Master’s degrees in Management & Leadership and Criminal Justice. Earning the nickname “The Faith Doctor,” I became triple board-certified as a specialist in Acute Traumatic Stress, Clinical Trauma, and Religious Trauma. My goal has always been to bridge the gap between clinical mental health science and spiritual faith. My doctoral research focused on trauma-informed, spirit-led programming for rehabilitating the incarcerated and reducing recidivism. I wanted to prove that treating the “whole person” is the most effective way to address the prison pipeline and aid successful reentry into society.
Today, my work is a culmination of everything I’ve learned across media, education, and social justice. As the founder of The Holistic Healing Source for Marginalized Society, I work to equip at-risk populations with evidence-backed frameworks for profound personal and systemic transformation. I also serve in board leadership for organizations like NAMI Illinois, advocating at the legislative level to dismantle the stigma of mental illness, protect disability rights, and press for stronger community support services. Whether I am stepping up to accept awards like the 2024 and 2025 Healthcare Advocate of the Year or working quietly with a local community organization, my mission remains unchanged. I am here to empower systemic change through radical community care and to prove that the people closest to the problem are also closest to the solution.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
To put it plainly, my road was anything but smooth; the polished resume you see today was forged in an intensely painful crucible. During my youth and young adulthood, I was trapped in an exhausting grind to beat the system being Intersectionally marginalized, bootstrapping my businesses and pursuing higher education while facing a lot of financial stress and the impossible balancing act of an overwhelmingly tight schedule. The relentless pressure took a toll on my health and compounded my severe Major Depressive Disorder. Attempting to numb the crushing weight of this stress and a profound, isolating loneliness, I fell into alcoholism. At my absolute lowest points, the darkness felt entirely insurmountable, and I am a survivor of multiple suicide attempts. I was fighting desperately to build a platform to uplift others while barely clinging to my own life behind the scenes.
That internal battle was further complicated by a highly volatile, rocky love life marked by intimate partner violence (IPV) from multiple men and deep, crippling feelings of worthlessness despite being overly self-sacrificing to an embarrassing degree in my young relationships. I also was outcast cruelly from my faith-based community over rumors and drama that were heavily exaggerated despite having invested thousands of hours of unpaid labor and numerous lifestyle restrictions during my prime years. It is a disorienting paradox to advocate for marginalized voices publicly while enduring abuse and feeling entirely unlovable in private. However, I share these deeply vulnerable truths not for pity, but because they are the very foundation of my expertise today. Surviving IPV, addiction, mental illness, suicide, and the absolute brink of despair gave me the lived, profound empathy needed to become “The Faith Doctor.” Every jagged rock on my path—from financial panic to near-fatal mental health crises—equipped me with the exact tools I now use to guide marginalized communities out of their own trauma and into holistic healing.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Holistic Healing Source for Marginalized Society. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Holistic Healing Source for Marginalized Society is a globally recognized, mission-driven hub dedicated to equipping historically oppressed and at-risk populations with free tools for profound personal and systemic transformation. We specialize in inclusive, integrative mental health programming that bridges the critical gap between evidence-backed clinical science and culturally resonant spiritual support. What truly sets us apart is our guiding philosophy—treating the “whole person” (mind, body, and spirit)—combined with our fierce commitment to radical accessibility. We understand that marginalized groups, including BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and disabled populations, often face disproportionate barriers to mental health care, education, and professional advancement due to systemic injustices. Therefore, our focus isn’t just on individual healing; it is on empowering grassroots leaders, healers, and supporters within these communities so they can drive sustainable change from the inside out.
Brand-wise, I am incredibly proud of our refusal to let life-changing knowledge be gatekept by exorbitant price tags. A perfect example is our virtual library of spiritually informed, mental health-focused self-help e-books and workbooks, which is 100% free and reached a six-digit readership within just a few months of launching, and won multiple national and international awards. I want your readers to know that whether they are seeking personal healing or professional validation, we have a supportive space for them. Alongside our free community education workshops and open-access research content, we offer highly affordable, globally accredited board certifications—such as the Integrative Spiritual Advisor and Holistic Humanity Advocate credentials, approved by the International Practitioners of Holistic Medicine (IPHM). We are here to provide the ethical frameworks and trauma-informed methodologies necessary to position our community members as certified authorities in holistic wellness, ensuring that the people closest to the pain are fully equipped to lead the solution.
