Comedian Gay Z of Los Angeles on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Comedian Gay Z shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Gay, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
I have had so many funny moments happen in my life recently, as living in a homeless shelter there are many crazy and unbelievable moments that have made me laugh hysterically. I recently had a funny moment while performing comedy in downtown Cleveland. I had for lack of a better phase, an Eminem, ‘8 Mile’ moment while on stage performing. I actually threw up while on stage telling jokes. However, instead of “Mom’s Spaghetti,” I choked from marijuana intake… Sorry Mom!!! The awesome part about being a comedian is being able to laugh at yourself and the audience thought it was hilarious as well. I was actually proud of myself in the same moment because that was the first time I performed live comedy since July 2024. I was extremely nervous and needed something to make me giggle!!!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Carli Robe, aka Comedian Gay-Z. I am originally from Cleveland, Ohio. I have been performing in front of crowds since I was 8 years old. However, I didn’t start working professionally as a comedian until November 2014. My style of comedy relates to all forms of life. I believe that my sole mission in life is to heal the world through comedy. My production company is called Rich Comedic Rockstar Productions. I am currently in the process of writing multiple television shows and box office movies. I have a sketch comedy show in the works and I’m also working on a few short film projects. The fact that I’m a person who was born both genders I can relate to both men and women. I am also Autistic so my comedy is childlike humor. I’m happy to be loving my job as a full time comedian and I’m proud of myself for chasing after my dreams.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful is when I was 5 years old and I was in Karate. I made it to the final test to receive my yellow belt. My Karate instructor made all of the students line up and stand side by side to get punched in the stomach to show our inner strength. I remember most of my classmates were scared of getting punched in the stomach. I however was not scared. I felt so powerful when I was able to keep my balance and not let my instructor knock me over. I knew at that moment that I was powerful.

When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
The one thing that helped me as a child to get over being sad or scared was watching comedy specials and TV shows. I was raised by TV and movies. I turned to both platforms for comfort. This is why I love being a comedian now because I can put to good use all of the comedy styles I learned to imitate as a child from watching TV and movies.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friend would say that RESPECT matters to me the most in life. I can appreciate anyone who can show me respect and I will make sure to reciprocate the same energy. To earn respect you have give respect!

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If immortality were real, what would you build?
I truly believe that immortality IS REAL and right now I am currently building MY EMPIRE!!!
