Check Out Yulia Buras’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yulia Buras.

Yulia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I finished a music school and later a piano performance college back in Russia where I’m from. I studied piano performance, pedagogy, accompaniment, theory, and more. Growing up and watching movies I became interested in writing film scores.
After moving to the US and becoming a citizen, I received a Bachelor’s degree in composition for film, TV and video games and Master’s in Composition for TV and multimedia – both at Berklee School of Music, Boston. I’ve written scores for feature and short films and received the best horror feature film score award for the film Limbo, directed by Mario DeAngelis, in 2024. I’ve written multiple compositions for orchestra, piano, choir, instrumental, synth, etc, and received multiple awards for several of my compositions.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s not a secret that there is always a struggle in the industry. It’s very competitive. The most important thing is to not compare yourself to others and to keep in mind that everyone has their own path. We keep meeting talented people, keep developing good friendships and along the way create something meaningful together! The journey to recognition isn’t fast, and sometimes we may need to get creative with our income, multitasking, balance, etc. It’s important to take breaks for your health and productivity. Patience is another important factor.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a pretty fast writer and I also approach harmonizing in my own unique way. I believe that taking harmonic support seriously is an important, moving part of writing music. Those are the things that probably set me apart.

I’m proud of recording a few of my pieces with the Budapest Scoring Orchestra. The orchestra is fantastic and they recorded many of the well-known film and show scores.

I’m also proud of getting The Best Horror Feature Film Score Award from the film festival “Horror Heaven Film Expo” – for scoring the film Limbo, directed by Mario DeAngelis, in 2024. The film contains multiple genres of music – action, horror, romance – in the orchestra and synth approach.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I would say, my teachers, my professors, my musical friends and colleagues – so many of them created an impact on my development as a musician and on my work! They taught me very many different things – good performance, scoring techniques and tools, music composition, collaboration, perseverance, positivity and respect! I was very fortunate to have taken film scoring courses taught by such talented people as Pinar Toprak (who scored Captain Marvel, Stargirl, etc) and Sean McMahon (orchestrator of Spider-Man 3, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, etc – who also greatly encouraged me in my work!)
