Check Out Myriam Akbar’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Myriam Akbar.

Hi Myriam, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been a writer for most of my life. I began taking it seriously in middle school and decided to join the journalism class in high school, becoming the editor in chief by my sophomore year. I started a blog based on a popular television show as well, earning opportunities like attending screenings in Hollywood. From there, I completed my BA in English Literature and Creative Writing. I never stopped blogging, started making social media content, and published a children’s book. These days, I work on my film/ television-based website and am pursuing screenwriting.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would say that my struggles with mental health and having a dysfunctional upbringing has impacted my process the most. However, I am proud of myself for continuing to pursue my dreams regardless of the hardship.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a journalist, author, and content creator. My website features film and television-based writing; such as essays, reviews, news, and interviews. My dream is to have my film and television scripts turned into a reality on the screen. I also want to teach English or Journalism, continue getting work published, and further my education. Through writing, I hope to educate, cause readers to think critically, make people feel seen, and provide healing words.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Reading will always be what helps my writing most. There’s a few screenwriting books that I am constantly referring to: Save The Cat, Save The Cat Writes Horror, and Screamwriting.
