Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Chambers.

Hi Kelly, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Becoming an astrologer started, like most things, with curiosity. I had a sort of inexplicable interest in what couldn’t be explained through the standard channels … the occult, the paranormal, predicting the future, where our ‘personality’ came from, the subterranean world of feeling, why you never see a baby pigeon. I think the baseline was just a fascination with the more hidden parts of life and the personality.

Astrology offered this wondrous but very precise lens through which I could understand life and myself better. It was also just incredibly interesting in the way psychology is interesting …. only it had this intrinsic and expansive mysticism that required believing everything is divinely connected — right up to the planets and the inner processes of humans on earth. Whoa!

It also probably quelled some gnawing sense of uncertainty or insecurity. I needed answers! 🙂 Astrology gives context and meaning to the overwhelming “randomness” of everything — and keeps some magic alive in the world. Others probably have less charitable names for it, but that’s what it does for me.

It evolved from a hobby to a vocation over the years, foundational of which was my mom gifting me my first live reading for my 17th birthday (thanks Mom!). That reading was eye-opening enough to continue on the path of astrological study, although never setting out to do it as a career. I read the right books at the right time, found the right mentors, and the right opportunities found me. My North Node is also in Scorpio in the 3rd House for an astrological shorthand.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been the bumpiest road simply because it was never something I tried to force. It felt like I was aligned with my chi 🙂 I just wanted to connect and help people in the way astrology had helped me. I was also never trying to “get somewhere” for better or worse, so everything felt like a great opportunity to keep doing and improving upon what (mostly) doesn’t feel like work. (I do remember ghost-writing one milllllion horoscopes for Working Mother magazine; at some point you run out of material and I caught myself telling moms to visit a convalescent home with their kids to get in touch with their inner Pluto. Sorry kids).

But of course there are struggles. The biggest struggle is just the business side of it. Being consistent, realizing you’re allowed to get paid for it, keeping the website up to date, doing videos…ay! Right now, I’m trying to integrate my other passion — dogs! (RVT services, canine teeth cleaning specifically) — onto the same website without compromising street cred. How do you think The Astrologer’s Dog sounds?

One of my biggest professional challenges (only half-joking) was trying to guess 16 Buzzfeed employees Sun sign from a short conversation for a segment. It’s a (nearly) impossible task — especially when you’re in the business of interpreting the entire chart. Are you sensing their rising? Their 1st house Uranus? Anyway… I see you now Scorpio. There are lots of misconceptions about astrology — one of which is the expectation that you can guess people’s Sun signs without fail and also that if you do astrology, you must also read palms, talk to the dead, and have a real job.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
There’s a huge intuitive piece to astrology. I think that is what gives you an edge. You have to be able to look at a fairly complex puzzle and distill what the client needs to hear and how they need to hear it … and even if two clients had the exact same chart, it “should” be a different reading. I always pray before a reading to get out of my own way… to trust the symbols in the chart, but to also trust what my attention is drawn to and allow something to come through that transcends the mere data of planetary placements and aspects. And then of course to keep going, sometimes having no idea if any of it is resonating and trying to make that none of my business.

I read a guy last week (this was actually tarot at an event) and I swore he was actively projecting a look of “this is total bs” to me across the table … but I trusted the cards, in this case, and kept going. When I was done, he gave me the most genuine affirmation of how right on the reading was, pointing to specific details in his life that correlated with the interpretation. I was even surprised — this $%^# works?! ; ) It reminded me to trust what you do – and also that you’re not doing it alone. It’s a participatory exchange on some level — the quality of consciousness and readiness of the readee can impact the reading, in the same way an audience can affect a play. So when a reading is total bollocks, I just blame you. Kidding! I blame myself.
