Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Uzoma.
Hi Jenny, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Well, hi! My name is Jenny, I’m 28 years old, Nigerian, and I’m originally from Woodland Hills, California. I’ve always considered myself a creative because I’ve never really been able to put myself into just one box. I’m an artist in so many different forms! Fashion, music, design, physical art, digital art and honestly, creating is just a part of who I am.
Music has become such a big part of my journey that I eventually created a stage name for myself: “Jennessy.” I perform at different venues, and staying busy with music eventually led me to create something called 60 Second Sundays, a series on Instagram where I would give myself 60 seconds to rap over a beat. It was really just me hearing a beat and thinking, “You know what? I can do something nice on this too!” It became a creative outlet for me, a way to have fun, express myself, and honestly, just vent sometimes.
I ended Season One of 60 Second Sundays after losing my father five years ago. That loss changed me in ways I don’t think I fully understood at the time. My dad was such an important part of my life, and I had actually moved back with him for a period of time before and during COVID-19. Like so many people, I was deeply affected by that entire period of life, but losing him made it even harder to find my way back to the person I was before.
For a while, I think I lost a little bit of my spark. But now, I’m finding my whimsy again. I’m creating again. I’m performing again. Season Two is coming guys, we’re back and we’re better! I’m putting myself back out there and remembering why I fell in love with being creative in the first place. That journey is also part of how I eventually ended up in Long Beach and where I am today.
And I think that’s probably the biggest thing I want people to take away from my story: you’re not alone, and it’s never too late to try again. Sometimes life happens, sometimes you lose people, sometimes you lose yourself a little bit, and sometimes you have to step away from the things you love. But if that passion is still somewhere inside of you, listen to it.
Go back out there. Try again. And then try again!! Because there are people who remember you; not just for your craft, but for the joy, positivity, and energy you brought into their lives. Sometimes you just have to give yourself permission to find that person again.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road on my journey has not been smooth at all! Geez! I was raised with a strong foundation, all thanks to my parents so I have made sure my face doesn’t associate with how I truly feel on the inside, haha! Seriously, I couldn’t do any of this without God, friends, and family.
When it came to financial struggles, relationship fails, and losing myself, I had to learn to be nice to myself. Be nice to people you don’t know. We all have something going on that can be the start to our villain origin story, but stay positive and keep your faith alive. Faith will aid you in every battle.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’d describe myself as a multidisciplinary artist. I work across music, fashion, graphic design, art, and performance. I’ve always loved being able to take an idea and turn it into something people can see, hear, or experience.
My first degree was in Graphic Design, but as technology and AI changed the creative industry, I realized I had to adapt and explore new forms of creativity. I’m currently studying Sign Language Interpreting, which has opened up so many exciting connections for me, including combining music and sign language.
Music is still a huge part of what I do. I perform, write, rap, and create, and I love how all of my different interests influence each other.
What I’m most proud of is my ability to evolve without losing who I am. I don’t want to be limited to one identity as an artist. I like experimenting, being playful, and creating from my own experiences. I think what sets me apart is that I bring my whole personality into my work. I’m multidimensional, so naturally, my art is too.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Man, huge shoutout to my parents, my brothers, Randy and Kenny for “keeping the torch lit” (our family motto), Randy has always reminded me of how special I’ve been all my life, we can’t let our fire die. Shout out to Marco, my soulmate, one of my best friends, the love of my life! He has been by my side supporting me for over 15 years of crap I’ve gotten involved in and has never switched up on me. Shoutout to Clay my other best friend for coming in later in my life, after my dad and everything, and still allowing me to open up my heart to a new friend who truly cares for me. Shout out my SisStar, Ms. Erinn Stacie baby, someone who will never, ever let me lose my spark again and will literally speak life into existence.
I genuinely don’t see how I could’ve gotten this far if it was not for them, physically, mentally, and emotionally.
and Big Shoutout to my brother Randy for the opportunity him, my mother, and I have coming soon on an extremely popular Streaming Platform! Look out for us early next year on your favorite network!
