Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenn Feldman.
Hi Jenn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I never set out thinking I was going to become an interior designer. In fact, my career started in public relations in New York, where I learned how to build brands, tell stories, and manage complex projects. About twenty years ago, I moved to Los Angeles to be with my husband, and that transition unexpectedly changed the course of my life.
I’ve always had a strong sense of space and design, even as a child, I loved rearranging furniture and solving spatial puzzles but I never imagined it could become a career. I was always helping friends with their homes and knew it was something I genuinely loved.
A pivotal moment came when Nate Berkus discovered my work, which ultimately led to an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show. That experience gave me the confidence to believe this wasn’t just a passion, this was a new path in front of me and it was my time to take a leap of faith.
In 2012, I officially founded Jenn Feldman Designs with the goal of creating homes that feel deeply personal, timeless, and truly reflective of the people who live in them. Since then, we’ve grown into a full-service interior design studio with projects across the country, working on everything from large-scale renovations and new construction.
What has never changed is my commitment and philosophy. We believe great design is about so much more than beautiful rooms. It’s about creating spaces that tell a story, support the way people live, and become the backdrop for life’s most meaningful moments. Today, our work extends far beyond interiors, we’re often leading entire project teams, coordinating architects, builders, consultants, and procurement, helping guide a vision from the very first sketch through the day a family walks back into their home.
Looking back, none of it was planned exactly this way, but I think that’s what makes the journey so meaningful. Every chapter built on the one before it, and today I get to do what I love every single day: create homes that bring people together and stand the test of time.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not! Like most entrepreneurs, there have been plenty of moments where I questioned whether I was doing the right thing.
When I started Jenn Feldman Designs, I wasn’t coming from a traditional interior design background. I had a career in public relations, so I had to earn credibility in a new industry while simultaneously learning how to run a business. Designing beautiful spaces is one thing. Building a company, leading a team, managing clients, construction, budgets, and all the moving pieces is something entirely different.
One of the biggest lessons has been realizing that design is only a small part of what we actually do. We spend as much time leading people, solving problems, managing expectations, and navigating construction challenges as we do selecting fabrics or furnishings. Every project brings unexpected obstacles, and every obstacle is an opportunity to figure out a better way.
I’ve also learned that growth requires letting go. In the early years, I wanted to touch everything myself because I cared so deeply about the work. As the firm has grown, I’ve had to learn how to build an incredible team, trust them, and create systems that allow us to deliver the same level of care on a much larger scale.
If anything, the challenges have made us stronger. They taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of staying true to our values, even when projects become incredibly complex. Looking back, I wouldn’t change those struggles because they shaped both the company and the leader I’ve become today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At JFD we create homes that feel deeply personal, timeless, and truly reflective of the families who live in them. While we’re known for sophisticated, layered interiors, what we really specialize in is guiding clients through incredibly complex projects, from large-scale renovations and ground-up construction to procurement, construction oversight, and final installation.
People often think we’re in the business of selecting furniture and fabrics, but that’s actually a small part of what we do. We spend our days leading multidisciplinary teams, collaborating with architects and builders, solving problems, managing budgets and schedules, and making thousands of decisions that ultimately allow a project to come together seamlessly. We often become the central point of leadership, ensuring that every decision supports one cohesive vision.
What sets us apart is that we approach every project through the lens of both design and execution. Beautiful design is only meaningful if it can be built thoughtfully, managed efficiently, and lived in beautifully. We pride ourselves on creating homes that are as functional as they are inspiring, where every detail has purpose and every space tells a story.
What I’m most proud of is the trust our clients place in us. We’re often invited into their lives during some of the biggest transitions they’ll ever experience … building a forever home, raising a family, starting a new chapter, and we never take that responsibility lightly. Our work isn’t just about creating beautiful spaces; it’s about creating the backdrop for a family’s memories for decades to come.
At the end of the day, that’s what drives everything we do. Beautiful design is expected. Building trust, solving problems, and creating a home that truly enriches someone’s life. No one cares more than we do, about everything we do.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I’m incredibly visual, so inspiration is everywhere for me.
Instagram has become an amazing source of discovery, not necessarily to copy ideas, but to discover artists, architects, makers, landscapes, hotels, and creative voices from around the world. It’s become a visual rabbit hole in the best possible way.
I’m also grateful to Josh Cooperman and his podcast, Convo By Design. Josh has been a wonderful supporter of my career, and through his podcast and community I’ve had the opportunity to participate in conversations and speaking engagements with some incredibly thoughtful people in our industry. It’s been a meaningful source of inspiration and connection.
That said, nothing replaces paper for me. I’m still a huge believer in design books and magazines. I love flipping through a book or magazine. There’s nothing like seeing great photography in print and finding a great new idea.
But at the end of the day, I think the greatest inspiration comes from staying curious – traveling, walking through a new city, visiting museums, noticing architecture, or simply paying attention to how people live. The world is my favorite design resource, and I’m always collecting ideas wherever I go.
