Today we’d like to introduce you to Genesis Calderon
Hi Genesis, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had love for makeup since I was a little girl. According to my mom, my first client was my Jesse doll from Toy Story. I sat her down on a chair and drew on her face with markers. Growing up, I would always watch my mom and grandma doing their makeup which sparked an interest in doing mine. As I got older, it became a part of who I was. I would go nearly everyday to school with makeup on. There were even times when some of my friends would ask me to do their eyeliner during lunch if they had a performance afterschool or something. As much as I loved makeup, it was never a huge passion for me. Originally, I wanted to become an Occupational Therapist. My brother has autism and I was exposed to the different types of therapies he would have which had me develop an interest in helping those on the spectrum. My mind was set on that. I knew where I wanted to go to college, I knew how many years it would take, I knew what I wanted to do.
During my senior year of high school. I completely lost my passion for it. I didn’t want to go to college anymore. I didn’t want to study anything. After graduation, although I didn’t want to go to college anymore, I was still enrolled. I kept thinking about how I didn’t want to go to school for the sake of going especially since I knew I wasn’t going to put all my effort into it. So, I dropped out. Thankfully, my parents weren’t upset about it. However, my mom suggested me to enroll in a makeup academy since I had an interest in makeup. So, I went for it.
I didn’t think my love for makeup could grow, but it did. As much as I loved doing makeup on myself, I realized I started to enjoy it even more doing it on other people. Once I graduated my makeup course, I knew this is what I wanted to do professionally as my career. I loved it so much I wanted to keep learning and take more makeup courses. Doing so has helped me learn different techniques from different instructors. One of them being Rihanna’s makeup artist, Priscilla Ono. I have made many connections which led me many opportunities to get me where I am today and I am extremely grateful.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting out as a makeup artist was challenging since there is so much competition within the beauty community. With so much competition, I had to work on not comparing myself so much to others. I feared that my skills, content, and creativity weren’t enough. There were moments when it felt like I was being held back by my own thoughts but I had to overcome that feeling in order to continue achieving my goals.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a professional makeup artist, I’m proud of not giving up on my passion despite the challenges. I’ve embraced every opportunity that came my way and have worked on a variety of projects, including music videos, photoshoots, beauty campaigns, runway shows, and bridal events. What sets me apart from other makeup artists is my versatility and willingness to step outside of the box. I explore with different styles and techniques, allowing me to create unique looks tailored to each client’s vision. I’m not afraid to experiment and push boundaries to deliver something fresh and exciting.
Any big plans?
I plan to continue perfecting my artistry and hopefully take master classes with some of my favorite makeup artists such as Mario Dedivanovic and Ariel Tejada. That would be a dream.
