Arthur Romeo of Mid City on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Arthur Romeo shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Arthur, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: When was the last time you felt true joy?
I feel joy every time I see my daughter go to school and is happy and healthy and excited about her classes. She does animation and art at the Hollywood High School magnet program. She’s doing very well and that makes me feel so sublime. She’s so funny she’s always cracking jokes and making funny drawings and animations. She’s always playing funny songs for me and showing me hilarious stuff online, I love her so much

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello I’m Arthur Romeo I wear many hats in the creative field! I am a visual artist I write, I direct, I’m also a Performing Artist on camera and for voice over, I also do creative consulting. I also coach for acting and teach art. I work events and parties doing balloons, face painting, puppet shows and caricatures and I’m also a professional pumpkin carver.

Currently I have a puppet show on YouTube I work on called the Dweebo show, I also work with a non-profit anti-bullying entity called Bully the Bull. I have a new film that’s coming out called “Mid City Dreamers” I play a character in the movie called Snow Blizzard. It’s really an amazing film directed by Justin Charles.

Currently I’m also building all of my social medias right now trying to make a whole lot of content as well. So you can find me on YouTube on Arthur Romeo Time and on tiktok as ArthurRomeo and on Instagram is @Dreamboat82

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
Back in college I had a professor named Cortheal Clark. He ran the scene shop in our theater department, and that was a time I learned the most about work ethic. I was part of the Charles Gilpin players at Prairie View A&M University and that place is all about work ethic because we were constantly putting shows together. We were constantly building, we had to get up and put the lumber together make the backdrops, make murals, Make the set come alive and that’s when I truly found out about work ethic.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
My childhood was a very harrowing experience. I spent 9 years and some change in the foster care system. There was abuse, neglect, and I found myself having to nurture myself throughout most of my childhood. It made me supremely independent as I grew, while also having plenty of identity issues.

I mostly survived my situation by being an early reader and being a burgeoning artist. If you read, especially at an early stage you develop a lot of empathy and it just makes you smarter. Becoming an artist during all those formative years helped me get through so much pain. Art is an amazing Outlet if you find yourself in trouble

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
I would say so, I stay pretty close to being my authentic self. I describe myself as a extra extrovert. When I’m out and about I like to make connections, I like to entertain, I like to make people smile and laugh whether it’s walking around in the world. Or on the stage on some the piece of art I performed on. That’s what enhances my creativity and drives my happiness

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I would love people to be more aware of the struggles of children and Foster Care. That’s why we spend a good amount of my time trying to get that word out and giving back to those young people. I also would like my memory to be a beacon for understanding the integral place that Art and creativity have in the world
