Art & Life with Staci Hall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Staci Hall.

Staci, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I grew up in Joshua Tree, CA. I was an only child and spent a lot of my time using my own imagination walking through the desert, catching lizards and building forts that were just a hole in the ground. It was a great place to grow up though I loved it. I started cutting hair in High school once I got my first razor and gave myself a mullet in my bathroom. From there, I started cutting friend’s hair and charging $5 for gas money to get to cosmetology school that was an hour away in Palm Springs. That counted as high school credit so by the time I graduated high school I had already started working in a salon. It’s been 13 years now and I still love it so much!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My art is cutting people’s hair. What I do is a collaboration between my client and I. They come in with what is currently inspiring them and then I see how that will best suit them and their features. I would say my message or inspiration is that I teach people to work with their own texture and embrace that instead of trying to look like someone else. I like to use a straight razor when cutting because I see it as positive and negative space and a razor is a single tool that I can remove weight and length and carve into the curl in this really special way to enhance it.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
I guess my advice would be don’t be afraid to take risks to put yourself out there. Anytime I’ve told myself I can’t do something because of the money I wasted time. Just start immediately and you will figure the rest out. Sometimes you’re living on top ramen for a minute or are working another little job, but I’ve found those oddly enough are my most creative times. Eventually, you build your momentum up and find your flow again.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
