An Inspired Chat with Zahangir Miah

We recently had the chance to connect with Zahangir Miah and have shared our conversation below.

Zahangir, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
Over the course of 15 years in the USA I built the modern standard of what SMP is today. I brought it out here and treated and trained most of the major providers who dominate their respective markets. In addition to that, they also trained and treated many people as well. At the end of the day all modern day teachings and systems of Scalp Micropigmentation started from us at Zang SMP.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello I am Zang Miah founder and one of the pioneers of modern Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP). I have been doing SMP for over 15 years now and brought the concept of SMP to the United States as early as 2009. Since then I fought with major hair loss solution providers to get SMP recognized as a valid hair loss solution that is a valid alternative to what has been out in the market. Since then in the early 2010’s, I have gotten recognition by medical professionals, hair transplant surgeons who are on the board, and general doctors to get them to send their own clients to us.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
SMP has been introduced into the world as a permanent cosmetic procedure where its influence came from the permanent make up world. Now it has evolved and become a prevalent hair loss solution alternative where major hair restoration surgeons offer SMP services in their own practice. SMP has many versatilities, not just for bald, totally shaved heads. For women who are thinning to those who have a scar from a hair transplant or skin discoloring from burns, SMP has many practical applications and all has come from evolving the techniques.

Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
Definitely the “good ol’ days”. When SMP was niche and I was the only cowboy in town, it was really exciting to see people discover and also put their faith into me to treat their hair loss. In the beginning there was no social media, the internet was just maturing, information was there but you had to look for it. Those that jumped the gun back in the early 2010’s were the bravest clients and was exiting to change their lives. Don’t get me wrong, I still change people lives today and the excitement for clients are there today but it was a lot more new and exiting back then.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Been the same person from the beginning and still to this day. I am not too much in the public eye, where most people in the industry are today. And unfortunately there are egos that are created in this space because of the power they hold to change people’s lives. The value I always believed in is to do good and do good for others. I was always in this to help change lives, not to be in TV or get on the red carpet. I love to work and stay working. I don’t let the fame or recognition get the best of me, nor do I think others should do the same, but everyone should just focus the job at hand, which is help improve people’s lives by addressing their hair loss.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
Think the question should be rephrased, what will I miss the most, and it’ll be the customers. I met the coolest and most intelligent people in my career all through me being their SMP provider. I know they’ll miss me because I’m sure they want the original artist to do their treatment and touch ups, but I am for sure going to miss the people that I have met.
