Good morning Shelley, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I start my day by walking my dogs, then I usually swim before heading into the studio from 10 to 5. Every day is a work day for me—creating is part of my rhythm of life.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember, even before I understood what the word “artist” really meant. Creativity has always been my way of seeing the world—constantly questioning how things are made, how they function, and how I can transform them. Making art isn’t something I do; it’s who I am.
Currently, I work with discarded vinyl street banners, transforming them from tools of commerce into works of art that reflect on our consumer-driven culture. These banners, which often end up as waste and pollution, are given a second life in my studio. Through weaving, cutting, and reshaping, I create pieces that are both visually striking and deeply tied to sustainability. My goal is to take what was once destined for a landfill and reimagine it into something meaningful, beautiful, and enduring.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I was very shy and hesitant to speak up. Now, I have found my voice and the confidence to speak my truths.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
When I commit to a project, I see it through. I thrive on the process of working toward a goal, and the satisfaction of completing it is always worth the effort.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I truly believe I was born to be an artist. Every job I’ve taken has been within the arts—whether designing rugs, teaching ceramics, or now creating with repurposed banners. Each step along the way has taught me something essential: designing rugs refined my sense of color, teaching ceramics taught me that any material can carry meaning. Today, I bring all of that knowledge into my current practice. While I now have the freedom to choose my own materials and direction, I wouldn’t be here without those experiences shaping me. Art is my breath and my life.
