An Inspired Chat with Sarah Carson

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Sarah Carson. Check out our conversation below.

Sarah, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I get up really early and do a variety of exercises: stretching, weights, balance, and brain. I know if I wait until later in the day to exercise, it won’t happen. I then meditate. I’ve meditated at least 40 minutes morning and evening since 1976 and only missed once when the anasthesia for an operation

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Sarah Carson. I wear several hats as a financial advisor, a private investigator/certified fraud examiner/ and I’m an actress. I’m regarded as a trailblazer in that I’m one of the first women to get an MBA from the Harvard Business School, one of the first civilian women to work as a private investigator and am among the early group obtaining a certification in fraud investigation. I’m also an actress, having started acting as a senior in age. I’m a remote relative of the late Johnny Carson, and I’m honored to have played a role as a mentor to several young people and inspired them to reach higher than they originally were.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My mother most shaped how I see myself. Before I was 10, she enrolled me in a book club called “Great Women in History.” Every month I would get a book about some woman who did inspiring things and some who even changed the course of history. Reading these stories led to my seeing myself as someone who could do anything except for those several pursuits that sheer strength was a prerequisite, and I would have to defer to the guys.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
One of the greatest wounds of ,my life is my father disinheriting me. I had found a spiritual advisor from another religious background and a different country than my own, and my father was certain he was after my money. So he tried to make sure the money I would inherit went to other relatives, although my mother thwarted some of his efforts. Happily, I’ve made way more than I would have had I just relied on being a trust fund baby. I’ve also forgiven my father for what he did. Bearing animosity towards someone is more harmful to the one with animosity than the target of it.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I think the entertainment industry wants to see itself as a repository of creativity. No, it’s a business and a much more risk adverse business than other industries. It serves up so many boring remakes and sequels and tired celebrities in role that don’t suit them.. Today the creativity is in the technology industries.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I probably have 10 years left at most. I have stopped allowing people and institutions to waste my time. Time is the only resource left that I can’t win back.
