An Inspired Chat with Nick Alvarado of Huntington Beach

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Nick Alvarado. Check out our conversation below.

Nick, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Yes — because I know what it takes to make an event feel right.

With over 20 years of experience, I bring a deep understanding of music, timing, and crowd energy. I started DJing raves, so I know how to truly move a room, and I carry that skill into weddings, parties, and corporate events with polished, seamless mixing and smooth, engaging announcements that enhance the moment instead of overpowering it.

I care about the flow of the event, the people in the room, and the overall experience — not just the playlist. I show up prepared, calm, and fully present, acting as a guide and partner throughout the event. If you value professionalism, genuine care, and someone who knows how to read a crowd and elevate the energy naturally, then yes, I’d hire me.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Nick, the owner and lead DJ behind SoCal Mobile DJ. We’re a Southern California–based DJ company specializing in weddings, private events, and corporate celebrations, with a warm, friendly, and down-to-earth approach.

SoCal Mobile DJ is built on decades of real experience. I’ve been DJing consistently since 1990, including over ten years performing for crowds of more than a thousand people. That background shaped a deep understanding of seamless mixing, crowd psychology, and how to tell a story through music — not just play songs.

That same standard carries across our entire team. Every DJ at SoCal Mobile DJ is highly experienced, professional, and trained to read the room, guide the flow of the event, and deliver smooth, engaging announcements when needed. We don’t just show up and play music — we partner with our clients to create events that feel effortless, fun, and genuinely memorable.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before expectations and roles came into play, I was a kid who was naturally drawn to music and people. We had an old wooden music console in the house with an 8-track and a record player, and no one showed me how to use it — I was just pulled toward it. I’d load tapes, skip tracks, and replay certain moments simply because of how the music made me feel.

I remember listening to artists like the Beastie Boys and Run-D.M.C., rewinding the parts where the energy really took off just to feel that excitement again. Music moved me before I ever had words for it. I was also constantly recording — singing into a small tape recorder, capturing songs off the radio, experimenting without thinking about it as “learning.”

As a kid, I connected easily with people. New places never felt intimidating; I made friends quickly and naturally. Looking back, that combination — feeling music deeply and being tuned into people — is still at the core of who I am and how I approach my work today.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
No — giving up was never something I considered. Playing music for people was ingrained in me long before I even knew what DJing was. It wasn’t a phase or a backup plan; it was simply part of who I am.

There were challenging moments, of course, but quitting never crossed my mind. It would’ve felt as unnatural as giving up something fundamental. Music and connection were always there, and continuing to share that with people was never a question — it was a given.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say that what really matters to me is connection — being present, listening, and making people feel seen and heard. I care a lot about how someone feels after a conversation, not just what was said.

They’d probably describe me as someone who’s easy to talk to, a good listener, and genuinely fun to be around. I pay attention not only to the words, but to the energy in the moment, and I want people to walk away feeling lighter, more grounded, or simply better than they did before.

At the core of it, I value people, honesty, and leaving situations — and conversations — in a better place than I found them.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I’m doing what I was born to do. I’ve always felt that clearly.

Finding a true passion is a blessing, and actually choosing to follow it is even rarer. A lot of people feel that pull but let fear, doubt, or limiting beliefs talk them out of it. I’ve always believed that when you find something that genuinely moves you and connects you to others, it’s worth committing to.

I try to encourage people to follow what lights them up, even in small ways. Most of the obstacles aren’t external — they’re internal. When you get out of your own way and trust what feels natural to you, everything else tends to fall into place.
