Mico Montes shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Mico, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Easy. Dancing. Getting into a groove always brings me joy, helps me decompress, and recenters me with my identity. I feel dancing is the most honest expression of yourself. If it’s alone in my backyard, out with my partner, or with friends dancing just makes me feel great and I think we should incorporate more dancing in our daily lives. My partner Cassie and I even have a special holiday we made up: Boogie Day May 27th.
It’s simple. All day long you boogie. No matter what you are doing just add a little boogie to your step.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I focus on telling stories in the spectrum of the horror genre. My screenplays can be described as gothic-supernatural with elements of the macabre. Many of my stories deal with themes of love and death and my characters are overly romantic in their pursuits. I’m currently working on my eleventh feature screenplay “Lovely Nightmares” a supernatural exploration of the dangers behind the curtain of the dream world. And I recently polished an older screenplay “The Immortal Door”, a tale about the grim reaper and the secrets he keeps in the abyss. But most importantly I just released my first feature film “Bare Skin” a psychological horror about trauma, which you can now watch the film on Apple TV.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My father. I’ve never met someone with the resolve he has to accomplishing his work. It’s intimidating. In the basement of my child home my father painted on the white brick walls a quote in red stencils, “The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person’s determination.” He believes it and I’ve come to believe it too.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, filmmaking breaks you mentally and physically, but you just mend yourself because you love it!
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
I believe the monetary system is an outdated social system and has become a sickness that we keep trying to fix. We have the technology to free us of labor and resources to feed, house, educate, and bring value to all the lives on the planet. The purpose of business (monetary system) be it capitalism, socialism, or communism is to profit, not to care about the planet or the people on it. I feel there are people way smarter than me trying with all their might to preserve our broken system,
until we outgrow the monetary system we will be putting duct tape on pipes that need to be redesigned and replaced.
“You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it”. -Morpheus “The Matrix”
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When have you had to bet the company?
Every time. As Christopher Nolan says in The Dark Knight Rises “Make the climb without the rope.” If you want to accomplish significant art you have to be afraid of failure by risking it all. That fear gives the determination you always need, because failure isn’t an option.
