We’re looking forward to introducing you to Lulu DePina. Check out our conversation below.
Lulu, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I’m running that path—charging forward, focused, a little breathless, but fully intentional. Not wandering.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Lulu, the founder of Common Ground Pilates. What started small has grown into 3 studios across West Adams, Mid City and Long Beach. Each studio offers community-focused Pilates and a wellness brand rooted in accessibility, inclusivity, and feeling good in your body. . We’re big on intentional movement, creating welcoming spaces, and real connection, not just building muscle. I’m always looking for ways to expand, collaborate, and challenge what a traditional Pilates studio can be, creating spaces where people can move, connect, and truly feel at home the moment they walk through the doors.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
Honestly—me. I’ve taught myself the most about work by showing up again and again and doing what it takes. I’ve built and rebuilt myself through multiple careers: earning my cosmetology license in my 20s, working as a self employed bookkeeper, producing a successful burlesque show for 10 years, and now owning and growing Pilates studios. Each chapter taught me discipline, resilience, and how to pivot without losing momentum. I don’t shy away from hard work—I trust it,
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Growing up poor and the fear of money scarcity held me back the most. That mindset shaped how I made decisions for a long time. I did the work—deep work—with my coach and healer, Liz Kerrigan (A Soul Purpose), to rewire how I approach money, worth, and possibility. It truly changed my life. I no longer operate from fear, and while I’m manifesting everything I once dreamed of, the real success goes far beyond finances. My happiest moments are when someone tells me that finding Common Ground Pilates changed their life. I cry every time—and I wouldn’t trade that kind of success for anything.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Haha—yes. The public version of me is the real me. I have zero filter, so what you see is truly what you get. People sometimes say I have a strong presence, but I’m actually an introvert. That said, when I’m in the studio, I show up with confidence, have fun, get people moving, and sometimes laughing while we’re doing it. It’s where I feel most myself.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
What would remain is my heart, my intuition, and my ability to create connection. Strip away the titles, the roles, all the tasks, and I’m still someone who shows up with purpose, builds community, and leads with care with a few sarcastic jokes along the way
