An Inspired Chat with Dassah Mariee of Los Angeles

We recently had the chance to connect with Dassah Mariee and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Dassah, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Honestly it is my family. They are my motivation and strength that keeps me going behind the scenes. I love the time I get to spend with my family, especially my children. It could be a work, school, or social event. I love every moment.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Dassah Mariee and I am the founder of Dassah’s Hair Boutique. I sell wigs, hair extensions, lashes and hot tools. What makes my boutique special is every product sold is hand picked by me. My goal with having my own boutique is to boost my customers confidence and have them feel good about themselves. If I can make one customers day by doing that, my job is done.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory feeling powerful would have to be the moment I stopped caring what people thought about me. I started wearing wigs at the age of 15. It was a way to express myself. I played with different styles, lengths and colors. A lot of my peers my age didn’t understand, but it wasn’t for them to understand. It was something I loved and it helped me shape the person I am today.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
It would have to be fear of rejection. I have missed out on so many opportunities in the past by being scared of embarrassing myself. I now face my fears and take every opportunity head on.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Never forgetting where I came from and who I am. Being a black woman I always make sure I show how proud I am and thank those who paved the way before me. There is a lot going on in the world and I never want to forget that.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope they talk about how strong I was. How determined I was. How I never gave up no matter what. That’s what I want my legacy to be.
