Abiodun Koya shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Abiodun , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Designing new pieces for my clothing line.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Abiodun Koya, a classical soprano, songwriter, poet, and creative entrepreneur. I’ve had the honor of performing on world stages including the White House and international concert halls, using music to connect cultures and uplift hearts.
Beyond my performances, I am the founder of ÒRÌṢÀ by Abiodun Koya, a luxury African-inspired fashion and accessories brand that celebrates Yoruba heritage through modern elegance. I’m also deeply involved in philanthropy, using my platform to empower youth and promote cultural pride through the arts.
Right now, I’m preparing for my 20th Anniversary Christmas Concert in Lagos and unveiling new creative projects that blend music, fashion, and storytelling to celebrate Africa’s regal beauty and global influence.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
What breaks the bonds between people is usually fear, pride, manipulation, dishonesty and the absence of empathy.
Also, when we stop listening: when we forget that every soul carries its own battles, personalities, ideologies and dreams, then distance begins to grow. But what restores those bonds is compassion, forgiveness, being truthful, honest, loyal, reliable and understanding.
A single act of kindness, checking in, holding the gap, a gentle word, or a willingness to see the divine in another person can mend what pride has broken. Love, transparency & patience remains some of the most powerful healing tools of all human connections.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self, “You are enough — even before the world recognizes you. Keep shining, keep believing, and never apologize for your light and strength. Every tear, every detour, every lesson and every silence will lead you to the song only you were born to sing so flawlessly!
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say that what matters to me are loyalty, truth, spiritually, adventure, authenticity, and most of all, people! Uplifting them, connecting with them, and leaving them better than I found them.
They know my heart beats for music, culture, and creating beauty, but even more for the lives touched through it.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What will you regret not doing?
I would regret not dancing fully with life & destiny, not taking the risks that navigation system, whispered to me, not saying yes to the wild, beautiful calling of my own soul and the romantic rhythm of my heartbeat. I would regret not living life vivaciously, not spending enough time with the ones I love, and not telling them often enough how deeply I love them.
