We’re looking forward to introducing you to Amy Bouse. Check out our conversation below.
Amy, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Like many people in Los Angeles, I spend hours a day commuting to my job. Traveling between Inglewood to Santa Monica provides many snapshot scenes that I use in my artwork.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an art educator and artist interested in analog means of expression. I am increasingly drawn to objects and surfaces created by humans.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a high school student, I believed that visual art was not a subject that pertained to me. I was more interested in written expression, primarily fiction and humanities.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
It will get better – not quickly nor consistently.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
Many smart people spend an inordinate amount of time on screens. The idea of understanding a distant place by consuming images and words online is appealing. I think it’s tempting to believe that we understand a place and experience through online depictions, but it is not a replacement for experience of a place in real life.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. How do you know when you’re out of your depth?
When I am in an area like Mongolia where I do not speak or read the language and must rely on others for translations.
