Today we’d like to introduce you to Sol Dean
Sol, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Grew up from a background where creativity and art was at the forefront of my life. Since a child my father taught me how to sing and act, where that led me to a passion in the entertainment industry. Started off doing talent shows since 1st grade to get more comfortable in the public eye with expressing myself. Began writing my own music in my junior year of high school inspired once again by my father being a poet he helped me understand what I was feeling and was able to help me express it through my writing. Senior year I acquired the confidence after a lot of people told me I should model to start applying to some agencies after a good amount a research, I started looking which one was the best fit for me. After getting multiple no’s from several different agencies I kept the saying “you get 100 No’s before you get a Yes.” That saying I’ve always spoken to myself gave me the persistence to keep applying knowing that there was one for me I just haven’t found it yet. Decided to move across the states to Chicago, since my extended family was out there that made me feel a little more at ease leaving my previous life behind in California. Two months being in Chicago I ended up being signed to The Rock Agency, which they then helped me get signed to The Option Agency a couple months later. After two years in Chicago accumulating myself with the people in the area getting some jobs, doing some Runway, Ecom and print work I decided to move back out to California where I then got signed with The Option Agency as well. They helped me book my first campaign this year with New Era which was exciting! Overall just been helping me solidify myself in California again in the entertainment industry.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not smooth I would say if you really want it “it’s going to take time, blood, sweat, and tears” as they say. Praying on what path is best for you is the greatest way for clarity. It most definitely can be discouraging seeing others excel when its not your time but to always be happy for others so you can have people to cheer you on along the way when it’s your time to shine! Getting multiple No’s and getting judged by unrealistic body standards was an issue. Getting told to lose some inches so you could book more work was tough, moving states to pursue it was hard for me considering I feel like a shy extrovert and in a complete different area.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a creative. I do fashion modeling, painting, writing and singing. I specialize in music and fashion doing runway, ECOM and print work. Most proud of my adaptability to not only my surroundings but my creativity. Learning new things as far as painting, pottery, crochet etc. Loving to connect with others making them feel an emotion when hearing/ looking at my music, art, or simply my light that God placed inside of me. What sets me apart from others is being proud of being a jack of all trades, not knocking things until I try it. Staying confident in myself knowing that if I set my mind to it I can accomplish anything, knowing that the world is my oyster to spread positivity and light in the right direction.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Seeing how I excelled in my craft over the years. There’s a lot to look back and appreciate. Doing talent shows, writing music, learning multiple instruments like the cello, violin and bass. Doing improv with my brother and performing our skits for others. My father playing oldies in the car teaching me a classic duet by Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack. A lot of great fond memories to look back
at and see how it shaped me into the woman I am today.
