Meet Eric Carroll of Eric Carroll Photography in Echo Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Carroll.

Eric, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m originally from Dallas, Texas. I studied photography in high school but did not pursue it as a career until I moved to Los Angeles. At first, I started small, taking actor headshots and small portrait sessions. 6 years later I’m now taking on larger projects and selling prints of my landscape photography. Headshots remain my bread and butter, but I’m expanding into the editorial world and cosplay.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Technology and money were a huge issue at first and can still be an issue to this day. Camera equipment can be quite expensive and if you truly want to keep up with the competition then you need the proper tools to compete. Moreover, it can be truly demoralizing to see the images you want to take and not be able to achieve that quality early on. But you have to keep learning and adjusting and stay focused on the prize.

Please tell us about Eric Carroll Photography.
I’m the sole proprietor and specialize in actor headshots. I try to maintain prices that are fair and won’t empty the piggy bank in a city that can be quite unforgiving to actors. Also, I’m a full-service photographer in that I take the photos and then retouch the photos for the client based on whatever photo package they choose.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I could change one thing it would be to settle on a camera body early on and stick with it. I was a Canon shooter, but when I switched to Nikon I found it to be an expensive transition.
