Today we’d like to introduce you to Dalina Soto.
Dalina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in a Dominican family, food is a major part of life. Plantains, rice, beans, yuca, pork, chicken, and all the other delicious island foods were staples in my family’s diets. My mom stayed at home, and we ate rice and beans every single day. Not only am I one of few bilingual dietitians in the US, I feel that it is super important to keep our cultural foods in our diets. They are a part of our identities and we should embrace them!
I love nutrition because, frankly, I LOVE food! Food is meant to nourish us and give us energy. And, on an even deeper level, our daily activities, special occasions, celebrations, and more revolve around food. Food should be an enjoyable part of our lives (yet it can still be so stressful!). I am a firm believer that we should not deprive ourselves of specific foods or nutrients, but instead incorporate the foods we love into our daily lives.
And this is why I use my voice on Instagram to reach Latinas around the world to ditch the diets and find body acceptance.
Has it been a smooth road?
NO! Not everyone agrees with how I practice (intuitive eating) because there is still a lot of misconceptions around it. Most people say that it neglects nutrition and allows for a free for all. Which is not the case at all! Intuitive eating helps you become in tune with your body, allowing you to nourish it without guilt. And nutrition is very much a part of it. The goal of IE is to help you ditch the unnecessary rules around food and allows or an open relationship with food that has no morality.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I have been able to create a niche working with Latina women who are tired of dieting and are looking to make peace with food and their bodies. My followers know me as a no bull Latina dietitian who loves food and wants everyone to maintain their culture alive. I am so proud of my practice for reaching thousands of Latinas and for being able to create a community where so many of them can feel seen and heard. I set myself apart by staying true to my roots and embracing diversity.
