Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicky Allado.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up to a musical family. My father was a drummer and had a great influence of who I am today. I pursued singing at a very young age – 6 years old. Growing up, I’ve ventured and dived into different musical genres – my love for theatre started when I was in 6th grade, while my dad had me learn contemporary ballads and jazz. Performing to Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” has been a signature song for my voice. As I entered to go into pre-nursing in my college years, I had decided to put off music. The pre-nursing program in Pasadena City College made me realize how much I missed music. I then enrolled in a voice class to balance my college sanity and then was later on encouraged to try out for the Opera Workshop. I got in and immediately fell in love with the academia of the music. It was challenging, but it was where I was most comfortable. Although I still love ballads, the challenges I faced in classical music gave me a sense of accomplishment throughout the years.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
After college, the road was definitely not smooth. As most musicians in Los Angeles, I had gotten a desk job. Supposedly a short-term deal, I worked for the company for about eight years. During those years, I had started to go to people’s homes to provide singing lessons. It was something I was familiar to doing since I had been doing that since I was 17. It brought me joy but did not think I can make a career out of it.
In March 2016, my father passed away. One day, after visiting him at his grave, I drove to his drum studio and knew that I can fill the studio with music again, but this time with beautiful singing. I then furthered my voice studies at The Colburn Conservatory of Music, with a concentration in Classical Voice.
Apart from my full-time desk job, the studio started to flourish which meant I was working tremendous amount of hours. In October 2019, I left my desk-job to go full-time at the studio.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with My Father’s Studio – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Our goal at My Father’s Studio is to help students realize, cultivate, and enhance their love for singing. We guide students on how to use the voice effectively. Primarily a voice studio, My Father’s Studio is constantly expanding.
My Father’s Studio was built out of grief and love, and that’s something I’m not ashamed to say! haha. But what I am most proud of is the improvement in the voice that I see experience through my students. My students are predominately children and women (I have men too!), and I see a huge confidence shift as they come in each week. I am so proud of all my students who tell me, “Guess what? I signed up for an audition” and they never would have done that prior singing lessons! That, I’d like to say, is a huge achievement.
When I was getting my education in music, I admit, it wasn’t the warmest place. There were a lot of artistic egos and that can intimidate or puncture one’s confidence. I wanted to build a safe space for students who do not know how to use their voice for singing but have the heart and perseverance to learn. That’s what sets us apart – it’s not only a studio, but we help build a relationship with music. Plus, we’re all family here 🙂
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
For now, we’re all about the Singing voice. However, we’ve started beginning piano for children and music theory as well. Apart from our shows that are held in the Summer and Winter, we’re also looking into performing at local coffee shops, for students who wish to get more experience in solo performance.
