Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaushlesh “Garry” Purohit.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kaushlesh “Garry” Purohit. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I come from Jodhpur, also known as the Blue City. (look it up, its beautiful) which is in the Royal state of Rajasthan. It is one of the most culturally rich states. From an early stage My family encouraged me to follow my Dreams and Passion and Introduced me to Tabla and Harmonium. This began my never ending love for music.
Post completing my computer science engineering, I could not see myself at a desk job. I quickly shifted my focus on audio engineering and started school at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
After finishing Berklee, I moved to LA and started working as a runner at Shangri-La studios. During that time, I also started working at Woodshed Recording. My first big project was working with Shawn Mendes for his 3rd album. Since then, I have assisted and engineered for the likes of Coldplay, Nick Cave, Carlos Santana, Kendrick Lamar and Run The Jewels.
Has it been a smooth road?
It was not a smooth road by any means. Going away from home to follow your passion in a creative field brings with it a unique set of challenges. Best is to understand; in as much detail as possible; what it is you want to do. Define your ideal situation and then backtrack from there. This way, you end up with a game plan.
My dad always says “Whatever happens, happens for good, only if you have given it your 100%”. This is my mantra. This helps me deal with victory and failure equally.
I had a lot of support from my friends and family. They helped me keep my head straight and grow.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am an Audio engineer, I Record, Mix and Master music. I specialize in working with large format recording studios and smaller recording setups alike. I have gained valuable experience working with industry leaders and I bring that knowledge to my work everyday. I am very passionate about this craft and what it means to be an audio engineer. I spend as much time making sure the artist feels comfortable, as I spend learning the skills to make a great sounding record. I have a philosophical as well as technical outlook when it comes to recording and mixing Music. This helps me understand what an artist is trying to achieve. I strive to become an engineer whom an artist can trust.
I am currently working on mixing Live Concerts. It’s time consuming but loads of fun. Every track has a bunch of bleed from other instruments, a mic gets moved out of place. Izotope RX is our Lord and saviour. I feel like a forensic expert, which is oddly satisfying.
Unpopular opinion: I like to have artists present while I mix their songs.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely. It’s the Largest Hub of Music in the world and I believe it is the right place for an audio engineer. Even our local bands have an international platform. Everybody wants to work with skilled and talented people. So, If you are good at what you do then you will do great.
