What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?

With so many high-achievers in our community it was super interesting to learn about the moments when they lose track of time. We’ve highlighted some of those conversations below.

Art. I have an L-shaped desk that spans two walls of my office. One end is devoted to photography, the other to crafts. I lose myself in handmade gifts – collage cards, carefully crafted birthday presents using pens, stickers, ribbon, vintage magazines and photographs. It’s how I show love. It’s how I let go of worry. It’s how I find myself again. Read more>>

There are actually three things that compel me to lose track of time and find myself again. They are listed here in no particular order: 1. Travel: Whether it’s local or international, traveling on planes, trains and in automobiles (and I cannot forget how much I love walking places) is my idea of heaven on earth. Read more>>

When I’m working on music, especially a new idea, I get into a flow state. I have to record the moment, because when I listen back to it there are things I don’t remember. I can recall certain choices I made with the notes I played, but others that really surprise me as if something was guiding my hands. Read more>>

I lose track of time when I’m drawing in my studio. It’s as if everything around me fades away, there’s only the paper and me. Drawing connects me with my inner world; it’s where I find peace and a sense of flow. It feels like a meditation, an inner journey that brings me back to myself. Read more>>

Honestly, I completely lose track of time when I’m shooting or editing my fine art projects. Once I pick up the camera or start working on an image, I just get pulled in—it’s like everything else fades away. I’m focused on the light, the emotion, the little details that bring a shot to life. I lose track of time when I’m creating. When I’m in nature, surrounded by animals, or sitting quietly after a sound bath or breathwork session, everything slows down. My thoughts clear, and I feel completely present. Those are the moments when I reconnect with myself and feel most inspired to create something meaningful that others can feel too. Read more>>

One of the great highs of being an artist is the heady sensation of timelessness that happens when I’m immersed in the creative process. Sometimes, when I’m focused on painting, and entirely absorbed in the act, I get that sensation. Read more>>

Flower arranging and tablescaping which to me go hand in hand. I love foraging for all sorts of things that I find in the urban and rural landscapes. I collect them and have created a special space to store them so that when an event comes I have the raw material with which to work. Read more>>

Creating. Always creating. When I am in front of the canvas, hours disappear. Sometimes I forget to eat, check the time, or do anything else. After spending hours in the studio, I tell myself, “Just one last correction,” and suddenly it’s 10 pm before I know it. It’s almost an obsession but in the best way. Read more>>

When I’m painting or sketching, I completely lose track of time. There’s something about bringing a story to life through watercolor, watching the colors move, fade, and blend that feels almost like meditation. I found that rhythm while creating Goodnight Surf City, and I’ve carried it into my newest project, Time Surfers, with Author Chris Epting. Read more>>

The ocean is the place I go to feel free, to renovate and find myself again. If its surfing then better, but just dipping my head in salty water, feeling tiny but also a part of everything. I can spend hours at the beach between water, sand and sun. Read more>>

Art and design have always been where I lose track of time and find myself again. My love for them goes back to childhood, when I first saw the design plans for the home my parents were building in Illinois. I remember studying those plans with curiosity, watching my mom sketch on them and my dad label them with his incredibly precise, engineer-like handwriting. Read more>>

Creating art for oneself is such an intimate act. I find that whether it’s painting or collaging, the time spent experimenting, mixing, and applying to the canvas forces me to slow down and surrender to introspection. In this meditative state of being, I definitely lose track of time. But, when I see what I’ve produced onto the canvas, even if it’s mid-process, I feel validated. Read more>>

That’s an easy one; for my entire life, the thing I’ve most wanted to do was write and draw graphic novels. For me, it’s like channeling a radio signal from the universe that uses me as its medium. I’m in collaboration with it, sometimes making decisions based on my intuition, sometimes trusting it to take me somewhere I wouldn’t go on my own. Read more>>

Astrology. When life gets too noisy and overwhelming I retreat to the stars. Astrology is a sacred language and communing with it always rebalances me. Especially in these tumultuous times we are living in going into stillness and sitting with the current energies is very comforting. Often in those moments powerful realizations come through. I do believe that we are deeply intertwined with the cosmos. Read more>>

The steps that lead up to my art studio in my Lake Arrowhead cabin are a portal into another dimension. The studio itself, often bathed in the golden California sunlight that conquers the A-frame structure most days of the year, is a place where time stretches out like a lazy cat on a summer afternoon. I don’t just paint in there. Read more>>
