Today we’d like to introduce you to Tsion Mitchell.
Hi Tsion, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been creating fashion since I was three years old. Every since I could pick up a pencil and draw, I was drawing clothes. Then that accelerated to designing clothing for my barbie dolls a few years later. Coming from humble beginnings and not having the latest cool designer clothing, I always wanted to create my own instead. Designing clothing and drawing clothes was a creative outlet for me as a way of self-expression since I was very young. So fast-forward to adulthood, it was always a hobby of mine to create clothing for myself as well as close friends and family and upcycle old garments I no longer wanted. I started to take it serious and create a business in 2013. I started out working with celebrity stylists and gifted my designs to them to get them on some popular people. From there, I started doing pop-up shops to create brand awareness for my line across the United States and generate sales when I was traveling and living outside of California from around 2014-2018. When I moved back at the end of 2018 to Los Angeles County, I decided to do a relaunch of my brand with new models and to get my name out there more. Most recently, I had a successful Fashion Show Event I put together for LA Fashion Week on October 9th in the heart of Hollywood, CA. It was epic. I am currently working on a few feature films doing the costume design for them.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’d say I have had about 10% smooth roads and 90% bumpy with deep potholes in the road along the way! Some of the struggles along the way mainly came from lack of resources, lack of finances to really scale the brand and create a marketing budget. But also, on a deeper side, I had to really do a lot of unlearning toxic self-sabotage that got in the way of me putting myself out there and being more active on social media about what I do. The unlearning journey stems from a lot of self-healing and reparenting my inner child. You can be the most talented, smart, and brilliant person in the world where anyone outside of yourself can see, however, if you do not see nor truly believe that about yourself, you won’t truly feel worthy of those titles. So that held me back in a sense of being afraid to shine and be vocal about my creativity and my experience with being a seamstress and a fashion designer. Having gone down the journey of healing has allowed me to fully be comfortable to walk into my purpose and feel worthy of all of the accolades that have come and the ones that have yet to come. I am truly grateful to be in this space.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Fashion Designer and Seamstress. I have over 20 years of experience between the two. I specialize in menswear, however, the majority of my designs can be unisex. My designs are categorized as Urban Couture High Fashion. I take pride in the high-quality materials I use for my designs ensuring the durability and long-lasting quality in each piece. One of the things that set me aside from others is that my designs are timeless and there are like nothing you have seen before. I am most proud of the fact that I did not give up on my dreams of being a couture fashion designer when so many obstacles were put on my path to deter me away from them.
How do you think about happiness?
Making other people laugh and smile. I love to make people feel good when they are in my presence. I am naturally a very silly person who likes to have fun, so if you are around me, you will inevitably laugh and feel comfortable in some way shape, or form.
