Meet Trev Deshon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trev Deshon.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I actually got started through acting. I was doing stage plays in high school and ended up playing Kanye once and performing his songs. I didn’t take rap seriously until 2014, but I always liked to write. I kept a personal journal where I wrote my first tracks in 2014. I put this song out called On My Momma, and immediately fell in love with the process. I started writing and creating a lot after that point. I kept practicing my delivery and cadence and developed the style I have now. That’s why I called my latest project Consistency. It’s been what has kept me going for this long. That consistent pursuit to get better.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ve definitely had my fair share of bumps in the road. During those times, it was super easy to start feeling discouraged in the industry. It’s a hard industry to not get discouraged at times. I’ve been through it all. I’ve had doubts that I might not always accomplish every goal I set, I’ve had haters close and far to me, and I’ve tried to cater my craft to people who didn’t really know my vision, which ended up compromising me personally. With rap, I had to figure out who I was first before I could start making music that made me happy. Once I was able to get to that point, I knew I could expand and touch others.

Praying has gotten me through everything. It’s simple. I’m able to keep my mind clear and my vision focused. It has helped me stay consistent honestly. It motivates me.

Music has also been my therapy. Being able to get my trials and tribulations out on record, it really helps me get through things. I enjoy getting to share my emotion this way.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m a creator, author, rapper. I’m Trev Deshon. My sound has been what has set me apart. The people who have experienced my music, especially recently, connect to it. My greatest quality has been that I put my real life out there for people to see. It’s honest. And I’m still developing lyrically. I think Consistency really saw my pen step up. The verses are dense. I’ve just been focusing on making music that will stand the test of time. I’m not worried about what people like for a small moment. I want to be able to go back and look at the music I made and be proud that it has lasted and still resonates. Just like the oldies, I grew up on. Earth, Wind and Fire, Miss Patty Labelle, Marvin Gaye; they all have music I listen to today that is still so relatable to things we are all going through.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Oh, we going crazy for sure. It sucks because Corona has put a pause on a lot though. My team had a few really dope plays that were supposed to happen in the spring and summer that have now had to be put on hold. And human connection is so crucial in music and having real success in the industry. We’re staying patient though and definitely staying consistent. When things start to look better towards the end of next year, we’ll be ready. We have a lot of great things coming. For starters, a few more Consistency installments.

In five years, though, I’ll be signed to a great deal. That’s facts. My team will have me set up owning my rights.

Personally, I’ll also really be focused on being more creative and trying new things. I have plans to publish my own book during this time. And I’ll just continue to grow in my music.
