Meet Jenna Alvarez of What The Fluff Lash + Brow

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenna Alvarez.

Hi Jenna, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Entering the beauty industry began as a skincare focused journey for me. After struggling with my own skin for years with seemingly no end in sight, I pursued an education in esthetics back in 2017 and became licensed the same year. The funny part? I became lash and brow obsessed along the way, leading me to dive headfirst into eyelash extensions the moment I had my official license in hand. After growing up in the high desert north of LA, living closer to the city and giving my all to the beauty industry was a big step for my life and little did I know, also for my career. My mindset was to be a “sponge” and learn as much as possible. While there were plenty of fun and difficult lessons to be learned in a short period of time, it has given me so much power to grow into who I am today as a professional.

I worked for various lash studios, salons, and medical spa’s all over LA before I came to a major conclusion- I wanted to create an inclusive space where individuals of various walks of life could achieve naturally beautiful, but more importantly safe, lash and brow goals. Offering damage-free services for my clients in a comfortable space while still ensuring I could thrive in a non-toxic working environment became the number one goal. What The Fluff Lash + Brow was born in 2018 whilst chatting with a girlfriend about a recent lash certification course I had taken, and it stuck. It has been a fast and wild ride since beginning the journey into solo artistry and I haven’t looked back.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Our industry can be incredibly competitive, which can make it even more challenging if you are fresh out of school like I was. A major learning curve was understanding where to draw the line between “paying your dues” and straight-up being taken advantage of- but I believe that is something just about anyone can experience in any field of work. I would say my biggest challenge within that was learning to give myself enough credit and knowing when to speak up. Obviously, a newly licensed esthetician does not know everything, but that does not mean basic common sense, common courtesy, and the knowledge you gain from your education is invalid. Never did I think I would need to teach myself the confidence to navigate situations such as those- whether with fellow professionals or with clients. It was one of the most difficult yet important struggles that I had to overcome, which ultimately helped me move forward in a way that I can be proud of. For that, I am sincerely grateful.

What were you like growing up?
I was always loud and creative growing up, and I have to say not much has changed! Any friends of mine growing up who spent time at my home know how loud our household was and understands why I naturally am such a loud talker. Being creative with my hands has always been something I gravitate toward and has always been an outlet for me. In middle school, my mom had me in art classes after school where I had the opportunity to work with chalk pastels, watercolor, charcoal sketches, and oil paintings. Outside of making traditional art, I was always rearranging my bedroom, building houses/interior design inspired renderings on an old PC game called “The Sims”, and messing around with fashion or makeup. If there was an opportunity for me to shut the world out and get creative, I would take it.

Personality-wise a lot of friends, family, and even clients consider me an old soul- I don’t disagree. But I am also wild and genuinely enjoy dancing to the beat of my own drum as they say. “Wild and Free” sounds cliche but that is how I have navigated the world a lot of the time. On the other hand, I am sensitive and enjoy embracing/expressing my emotions, and have always had a very nurturing heart. I am the eldest of two daughters, and we lost our mother to pancreatic cancer while I was a freshman in high school. Since then, I have always behaved from a mothering standpoint before being a sister or a friend. That moment in my life really affected how my personality would change moving forward. Sometimes I like to joke and say I am an 85 years old elderly woman stuck in a 25 years old body. But I am happy to be who I am in spite of the good and the bad that has made me this way.
